Rogers offered to miss starts

Kenny Rogers said Tuesday it was his suggestion to come out of the rotation for the rest of the season so the Tigers could evaluate other starting pitchers. "I told Skip (Jim Leyland) that I didn't want him to feel like he had to start me anymore," Rogers said. "I don't want starts unless I've earned them, and the last thing I'm going to do is stand in the way of some development of a younger kid who needs a game or two that could give the information to Skip and the Tigers to have a better read on him. "I only want things I've earned, and I didn't feel like I was earning my keep. I think he understood." Rogers' absence might give Leyland a chance to get a longer look at two returning veterans, Dontrelle Willis and Freddy Garcia (who makes his first Tigers start tonight). The Tigers' other starters are Justin Verlander, Armando Galarraga and Zach Miner.

Hopefully what he really said was, "if I am going to be the new pitching coach next year, I would like to practice it for the last few weeks. Don't worry, we won't tell Chuck."

Biminator - He would be a good pitching coach. Chuck has a mess with starting pitching and the bullpen is a disaster. Rodney and Farnsworth are flat our disasters and Zumaya is blown up w/ injuries. Amazingly enough Jones looks like the best option for next year if we don't pick up a closer in the off season.

well at least he isn't going out there and trying to pitch and putting up a HUGH number on the board for the other team. Good move on Rogers park.. hopefully he can find something else to do next year.

How old is this guy? He would be a great pitching coach.

While its true that the Tigers pitching is a mess, the blame should land at the feet of Hernadez. Every single pitcher he has come in contact with in Detroit has gotten worse under his guidance. That is not a coincidence. Being that Leyand has shown that he has no idea when to pull a pitcher or when to leave him in the game, the Tigers desperately need a pitching coach who can help with those decisions as well. I have caught Leo Mazzoni broadcasting some games. He should be available soon. He would be an interesting acquisition for the Tigers.

Mazzone could probably do wonders for the Tigers' staff......I agree.

September 17, 2008  10:40 AM ET

HA. I think its funny that he says it was "his" idea to step aside. Rogers is one of the most selfish and surly player to ever play in the majors. Ive seen it when he was with Texas and he would get mad when they pushed back a start or anything. Maybe the last 4 starts where he has given up 6 earned runs is why he being skipped.

"I only want things I've earned"

yeah... like my paycheck for the last month, while riding the pine. How big of you, gambler

Kenny probably should sit out for a while... That'll give him more time to beat up cameramen and rub pine tar all over his body.

Try offering to RETIRE sydfynch

Good riddance to Rogers, and his crappy overhyped team

September 17, 2008  05:51 PM ET

At the end of this season Mr. Rogers - take your self-"importance" and try to sell it to another G.M sap !!!

I'd like the Tigers to try him out in the bullpen. He could still probably go out and throw one or two good innings. I just hope the Tigers keep him in the organization somehow.
