Is Syracuse in Kiffin's future?

After losing the first three games of the season by a combined 11 touchdowns, with one of those losses coming to Akron, the rumor mill's at full speed regarding Greg Robinson's potential replacement as SU football coach. The latest is concerning a guy who's still holding down a job as a head coach in the NFL, although maybe not for long. Add Lane Kiffin to the list of potential future candidates for the potential future coaching vacancy at Syracuse University. The coach of the Oakland Raiders, 33, is reportedly close to being fired by SU alum Al Davis, after Kiffin told the media last week that his defensive coordinator and Davis were working against him. If Kiffin is canned, the thought is he would be free to take over at Syracuse right away if the Orange decided to make a mid-season move. Kiffin was the offensive and recruiting coordinator at USC while SU athletic director Daryl Gross was there.

Let me know when this actually happens...

Crazy Al will owe Kiffin about another $4 million for the this year & next year if he fires him. Kiffin can afford to hold out for a better opportunity (i.e. MN Vikings). Kiffin is a smart coach and I wish him the best, as long as he does not return to the PAC 10 with a school that is NOT USC.

Kiffin to the Rams. He is not a bad coach at all. And I think Al should hire Paula Abdul to coach the Raiders. She is someone who knows less about football than him, so it should work out.

Anything can happen...and it usually does.

LOL, thanks for the best comment I read this morning

Well, I doubt this happens. Once these young guys get a taste of that much dinero, it's hard for them to take that much of a pay cut. Now, he would maybe take another high profile job at a school that is actually winning games and going to bowls every year. They could find way to bridge the payroll gap, but in our current state of meltdown, Not gonna happen unless there is a hidden slush fund somewhere

not sure why kiffin even wanted the Raiders job since anyone who takes it is doomed from the start as long as Davis is the owner.

September 17, 2008  12:30 PM ET

I've been a "Cuse fan for over fifty years and can't believe anyone would want this job. The 'Cuse sealed it's fate when they fired Paul Pasqualoni.

September 17, 2008  02:43 PM ET

If Lane does get fired, I can see him going back to the College game. However, I can't see Syracuse.

The 'cuse should give Turner Gill a shot. He's done what he could with Buffalo and it's possible that he can push Syracuse to do better.

Kiffin certainly wasnt the first choice for this position. He was only interested in moving up in the coaching world after quickly coming onto the scene under/with sarkesian and chow at USC. Once Sark declined the Raiders HC position, it was a stretch to think Kiffin was a good fit (not to take anything away from Lane). Who's worse Al Davis or Matt Millen?

You're a heck of a fan... with fans like you, who needs enemies?

As a Syracuse alum, I would love to see Kiffin take over. I'm actually shocked that Gross didn't can GR last year - EVERYBODY knew that there was no way he was magically going to turn it around this year.

I don't think that Kiffin would sign on to go to SU in mid-season. I think he would wait and see what develops (assuming he does actually get fired.... eventually.... whenever Al gets around to it...)

September 17, 2008  06:02 PM ET

Why would ANYONE want that job? That would be a demotion for a HIGH SCHOOL coach!

September 17, 2008  06:36 PM ET

University of Washington in his future? I would love to see him make them relevant again.

September 17, 2008  08:09 PM ET

I highly doubt Kiffin would come to a college program on the East Coast, especially in the 2008 version of the Big East, especially at Syracuse... Come on folks he used to be on the Southern Cal staff. Syracuse??? More ridiculous things have happened but...

September 17, 2008  11:41 PM ET

I wouldn't see him going to Syracuse. I think EastCoastKeith is right, there are to many west coast gigs he could get. The Rams is a real possibility because I see their HC out if the don't go on a hot streak and soon. If Kiffin went to the east coast I would think that the Browns give him a shot. I think Crennel's job is in jeopardy....and there is always the Bengals.

The Paula Abdul crack was great....but I think Al will have to promote his DC. I mean, you have to give that little gnome something after all he has done for ya Al.

September 17, 2008  11:46 PM ET

Kiffin to Tennessee! After a 4-8 season Hamilton will finally acquiesce to the Vol Nation...he would be a great, young hire with an innovative mind

September 18, 2008  04:29 AM ET

Anything is better than Oakland.

September 18, 2008  06:56 AM ET

Al Davis you did many great things for the Raider Franchise, you brought Super Bowls & the team back to Oakland where it belongs but your almost 80 an your starting to suffer mentally if you think Kiffin's going to resign. He's a young, hungry coach & he's built a Offence an a solid D wth sme upcoming stars aside from the WR's which in turn would make JaMarcus alot btr but AL, shut your mouth sit in your DAMN LUXORY BOX an stew in your GPa Diapers. Your team still isnt good not because you dnt hve the Defensive players cause you do but because the DCoordinator isnt the right man for the job.
The players like Kiffin he took the job when nobody wanted it an turned Oakland into a up an coming squad, but just because Kiffin doesn't follow all your order's doesn't mean you fire him, that's what young good coaches are supposed to do. Deal With or Just Die Already except I doubt that to many people will show up at your funeral. All the Raider's need is a big 6'3-6'5 315-330 pound DT an sign Asimouga to a long term deal an bring in a DefensiveCoordinator like Jim Johnson or Monte Kiffin or hell the Miami Hurricanes Bill Young an blitz frm all sides an change it up.

September 18, 2008  08:40 AM ET

When Arizona and Washington may be availabale at seasons end why would you go to Syracuse? The reality Syracuse fans is the program is headed in the direction Temple was........Facilities, campus, fan base.......small, old and can't compete even with a trimmed down Big East. While basketball and lacrosse are crown jewel sports. Football would be more competitive in the MAC.
