Angels facing new '09 lineup?

Even if the Angels win the World Series in October, it will be impossible, based on the financial parameters laid out by Arte Moreno on Tuesday, to keep this entire team together for 2009. That much became clear when the Angels owner emerged from two days of organizational meetings here with no plans to boost next season's payroll significantly beyond its current $123 million. The upshot: Don't expect all five of the Angels' potentially pricey free agents -- first baseman Mark Teixeira, closer Francisco Rodriguez, outfielder Garret Anderson, pitcher Jon Garland and outfielder Juan Rivera -- to be back in 2009.

Just WIN the World Series - Then we'll worry about it!

Go Angels!

G.A. has to come back. An incentive-laden contract will do the trick. He will retire an ANGEL. One of Van Ness Park's finest.

Uh....duh
Thanks T&R

September 17, 2008  10:05 AM ET

Yeah...I think it is fairly obvious that they weren't going to bring back all those players mentioned....

Brin back Anderson as a 4th outfielder and let him know that coming into the season. Sign Garland to a 2 or 3 year deal. But dont waste money on K-Fraud or the Expensive Tex.

Keep Texeria and KRod. They are the future. Hey Garret, thank you for the wonderful memories and we will miss you. Go ANGELS Go.

Try and keep Tex and you will have to cut more salary elsewhere, K-Rod is going top get between 12 and 15 from someone. Will the Angels pay that? I doubt it.

Good, they're overspending and it needs to be controlled. According to Billy Bean, the closer position is the most overrated, and I tend to agree. Let K-Rod go and use Arredondo or Shields in his place. It would be great to try to get rid of Matthews' contract, just for the fact he was using HGH and isn't the player they thought they signed.

And what's up with the guy in the stands wearing the Boston cap with Detroit jersey???

omg... my eyes bleed when I read your comments... and I'm not talking about the picture... do you even read your comment before you hit submit? or are you retarded on purpose?

If they win it, Anderson retires. Garland is gone as he's been somewhat of a disappointment. I think that they try to keep Tex and let Riveria walk. As far as K-Rod, let him go, I often get that "don't screw this up" feeling when he enters the game. I agree with Jyoun79 - Shields possibly for a year, then it's Arredondo's gig as closer.

They won't re-sign K-Rod because he wants too much and we have other dependable arms in the pen. What we don't have is the bat that would leave with Teixeira which is why I think they try and make a big push for him. I think they will see how things go with Tex before they decide anything on Rivera.

September 17, 2008  02:14 PM ET

I think they should re-acquire Adam Kennedy from the Cardinals and play him at 2B. I doubt that this would help them, but it would get him out of St Louis.

September 17, 2008  02:22 PM ET

Great news, I don't understand why they would even want to bring back G.Anderson or J.Rivera. Though it'll be tough to see K-Rod go, he comands too big of a contract. John Garland is a replacement level player. Obviously the big guy is Tex, and though the Angel's will try hard to keep him, I think the Yanks will snatch him up. I hope they do find a new closer instead of just moving everybody up one in the bullpen. The Red Sox and Mets know very well that you can't compete (or make) the playoffs when you don't have a proven door-slammer.

Not only would that be 50% of their offense, they wouldnt have a legit 1st baseman.Sign Tex.Anderson.Let K-Rod and Matthews go.Bring back Rivera.Let Jon Garland go. Sign C.C Sabathia.
