Hendrick: Junior must control his temper

The message from car owner Rick Hendrick is clear, but will Dale Earnhardt Jr. listen? Hendrick said Earnhardt must be more focused during races - a problem that has dogged Earnhardt throughout his career - to win the Sprint Cup crown. Hendrick's assessment came Sunday after he had to calm his driver on the radio for the second consecutive week. That Hendrick's declaration came just one race into the title Chase is telling. The whining must stop now, Hendrick seems to be telling his driver. Volcanic eruptions by Earnhardt are common on his radio. Crew chief Tony Eury Jr. often takes the brunt of the abuse, but there's a deeper problem than how Earnhardt talks to his cousin.

We tend to talk to family differently than we talk to others. Maybe Jr. needs another crew chief. That he's NOT related to.

OH, this is gonna be a Great Thread today.
Morning Rick, I have always held firm that these 2 Jr's should be kept as a team, but here lately I have began to have my doubts.
I wonder how his Dad communicated with his crew chief ?, and I haven't listened t any other drivers to see how they interact.

well well welll... its all going to come out now.... this is not telling us anything we didn't know before.. JR is one of the BIGGEST CRY BABIES in nascar.. things have happened all year old, pitting, tires, poor calls made by crew chiefs, does this give JR a reason to whine? NO. should he and Tony JR be together on the same team? I don't know... some times the worst thing you could do is work with family. but he wasn't any better when he wasn't with him either.

I can tell you one thing -- the apple doesn't fall far from the tree ... some of the radio "come to Jesus" transmissions from Dale Sr. were X-Rated. I am sure Dale Jrs conversations at times are in line with other teams. Rick H is the "Godfather" and will quell this situation...and you can take that to the bank (if you can find good bank anymore)

I seem to remember an interveiw where Larry Mac said Sr. was a bear to work with. Jr.&Jr. have always been like they are on the radio, cept now Mr. Rick spects everyone to be like his other boys Jeff and Jimmie, something we all should've saw comming.

When the hell did Men stop being Men.
Society is determined to cut the nuts off every man to make him docile.
If this is the way these two men talk to each other, then it's the way that they talk to each other period. Anybody who listens and then makes a determination
that it's mean talk needs to grow a pair.

Well said Shave, I knew you had at least Half a pair! LOL
Rick might get JR to tone it down slightly, but I don't think JR will change the way he communicates on the radio, and rightly so!

Nicely said!

Jr. just needs to quit whining and focus on driving, which it seems he's having a hard time doing. I think Rick H. is just pointing out what so many of us have said about Jr. Clearly something needs to change for him to win a championship. Like Rick H. or not, he knows how to produce champions.

I think what some are calling whining is in reality frustration, trying to understand why set ups haven't been better. Jr is still 4th in points, still running up front, but the fading back towards the end of the races because of car set up is giving JR a fit.

September 17, 2008  11:19 AM ET

Maybe he should have had this pointed out to him at DEI long before......oh wait, the owner had no idea want went on during race day while she was drinking mint juleps hundreds of miles from the action.

Gotta agree, Don't. JR gives feedback and then the next pit, the issue is worse or not fixed. Frustration will build in any driver. Let em talk like they want, it doesn't seem to hurt their work relationship.

September 17, 2008  12:05 PM ET

Rick is really following thru with Jr to help him with the championship...Rick has more experience than Jr (obviously), so Jr should listen instead of continually finishing 4 or worse.

September 17, 2008  12:15 PM ET

am i the only one that thinks Hendrick should trade eury jr to JR Motorsports for pops (eury sr)? Jr had a lot more success with him at the helm... and pops still has it, brad k is doing well..

in my opinion dale jr gives some awful feedback its either "too f'in tight" or "too f'in loose".. perhaps if he used a 1-10 scale and actually gave quality feedback, he would not fall off after the 2nd pit stop every race.

September 17, 2008  12:41 PM ET

Let the two of them argue, who cares. Jr. is having a decent, not great year, someone is doing something right. The way Dale Jr. cries, I think if he was hooked up with a non relative, the blood would be flowing in the pits.

Blah blah blah, everyone knew Jr whined alot. Shocking that RH is calling him on it in public.
