Ed Hochuli is a stand up guy. After blowing a call late in Sunday's game that allowed the Broncos to rally and beat the Chargers, the long-time NFL referee admitted his mistake during the game and now is reportedly facing up to angry Chargers fans who have been flooding his e-mail with hate mail. According to several Internet reports, Hochuli feels so badly about his mistake that he is taking the time to write these fans back. "I'm getting hundreds of emails -- hate mail -- but I'm responding to it all. People deserve a response," he wrote to several Chargers fans according to The San Diego Union-Tribune.

Everyone makes mistakes, Ed Hochuli is a great ref. How would you like random emails complaining about your job preference. They need to leave him alone, he's on Madden for god sakes :)

He should be fired for apologizing. What a wimp. How can he be trusted - now?

Those angry Charger fans may want to email the players on defense that cannot stop anybody in the fourth quarter when the game is on the line..Just a thought...I think the team is 0-2 for reasons deeper than one bad call by a referee...

That's good enough for me.

Everyone makes mistakes, was the chargers defence in the right formation everytime, did everyone make their tackles or blocks, was the right play called each time, was every ball caught...looking at the score no no no...give the ref a break !

You all can flip this on the Chargers but even after doing all that, they still were in a position to win. Or atleast make it very harder for the Broncos to win. He messed up. He stepped up and is taking blame for it. I have more respect for him for doing this, then trying to run and hide behind Mike Peioria (sp?).

He should reply to every email with " F U "

September 18, 2008  07:54 AM ET

i have never seen so much press on a blown call before. my lord

True. Didn't the same receiver catch the TD and the two point conversion?

September 18, 2008  08:06 AM ET

can't wait for the collection of his letters to start showing up on torrents, memes, digg, etc.

Same play even.

You know what he's a stand up guy, a lot of referee would not go through all this troubled to apologies to all you fans, give the guy a break man what else he have to do he admit he was wrong stop with all the hate mail on this guy.

September 18, 2008  08:32 AM ET

I agree with those that have said this was the right thing to do and something we should expect from a guy who is one of the best refs in the game. He made a bad call and is manning up to it.

September 18, 2008  08:44 AM ET

Don't bother, Ed. They will not listen.

September 18, 2008  08:44 AM ET

The 'roids made him do it. When will the refs be tested for PEDs?

September 18, 2008  08:55 AM ET

Too much press about one bad call- wheres a Done-aaghy thread when you need one for watching a ref get beat down...

September 18, 2008  09:12 AM ET

Cut the man a break. If you want to be pissed off, blame your defense.

September 18, 2008  09:21 AM ET

50yearfan said it best. Sure the call was bad but I wouldn't use that as the scapegoat for a team that's suppose to have a "good" defense. Giving up 65 points in 2 games is not good football.

Kudos to a standup guy. All refs make mistakes but this guy is taking responsibility for his. What a concept.
