Are Vikings done with Tarvaris?

The Vikings' franchise quarterback. The future. The present. Until this week, Tarvaris Jackson was all of those things. Now he's the backup after an 0-2 start. Jackson found out he lost his starting job in a meeting Tuesday morning with coach Brad Childress, who announced Wednesday that the change is official and that veteran Gus Frerotte will be the starter for the rest of the season, barring injury. The move means Jackson's long-term future with the team is unclear. Suddenly, he's gone from the young quarterback who supposedly had made substantial progress in the offseason to the guy who couldn't hold onto his job longer than the first two games of the season. Jackson repeatedly answered questions about his future with the team in the same manner. "Right now, I'm just taking it one day at a time," he said. "You never know exactly what's going to happen. I'm just trying to work hard each day." In explaining the change, Childress said Jackson isn't as aggressive as he was before a sprained right knee caused him to miss two exhibition games. Because of the significance of the change and the timing of it, it's possible Jackson's future with the Vikings is finished.

Probably, the boy had his chance and blew it. Plus I heard that Petersen really does not like him, so the change was made. You have to win in this world and this boy is a loser.

Childress is looking for a life line to save his own job , T. Jackson was his idea. He is already covering his poor decision about the QB spot when he claims that the guy is not as " aggressive" after a pre season " injury." That is coach speak for " I blew that one bad."

Anybody who thinks Frerotte can play 14 games this year, AND play good, is wrong. Tarvaris will be back sometime this year.

September 18, 2008  07:21 AM ET

Jackson (the young MAN) said and apparently did all the right things during the offseason and really had me convinced that he was going to shine as soon as the lights came on. I don't doubt that the knee injury factored into his play but he still hasn't gotten it done. It looks like the Aaron Rodgers guide to becoming an NFL starting quarterback would have been a better plan here.

September 18, 2008  07:33 AM ET

He's not a good quarterback, plain and simple.

September 18, 2008  07:41 AM ET

Once again, Garcia is up for grabs. Frerotte is good for a game or two, at best. Go get a real QB for god's sake. The Vikings may be right back at the bottom of their division after this year. If they're gonna have any chance to go anywhere this year, it aint gonna happen having Frerotte steering the boat. Especially if their are any stripper on it.....

Well, at least I can say that the Bears didn't have the worst QB in the NFC North for the first two weeks anyway. Blah.

And don't try and defend you were talking about his maturity. You generate hate with your posts. Your intentions are always mean.

ask every backup on every roster, how they got there. most will say admit they used to be a starter, that it didn't work out for. starters in the NFL only have so long to produce results, after that they become either backups, unemployed, or cfl/afl qbs.

September 18, 2008  08:19 AM ET

Hey, send him to Tampa we can always use more QB's for Gruden to wipe his **** with

September 18, 2008  08:25 AM ET

Where are all the people that were saying he is great during the chad to vikes rumors? Bet they wished the vikes had gone after chad now dont they. Would be nice to have a QB that can complete a pass with that steamrolling RB they have wouldnt it.

September 18, 2008  08:28 AM ET

This is not a long term sloution with Gus Frerotte I not sure if you want him for a whole season. I would be on the phone with Bucs right know and get Garcia give him a week or two to learn your system and put him out there. Jacson just look like he dosen't know what he's doing out there.

September 18, 2008  08:29 AM ET

He is not done...hate to see the Vikes give up on him....PANIC at the Disco.
But Ferrotte...yeah, he is done.

I've said it a thousand times on here, and will continue to do so. If you set a guy up to fail, he's going to fail. Granted, the Vikings have one of, if not THE, best running attack in the NFL, but when you surround a guy with mediocre receivers, you can't expect much. Tarvaris Jackson isn't Tom Brady. He can't turn Bobby Wade into a productive receiver. People keep bringing up the fact that he hasn't been extremely accurate, and he hasn't, but you can't expect much when guys are dropping balls when he DOES get them there. 14 of 24 is a decent stat line. The 130 yards needs improvement, but it would have been better had there not been drops. Also, you see the Vikings talking about "opening up" the playbook for Frerotte. Why not do the same for Jackson? Why limit the plays? When you run the same three guys the same three routes every time, how do you expect to succeed? Although I agree with 50 year fan in that it's a move to save job, Childress has nobody but himself to blame. He and Darrell Bevell should be ashamed of the playcalling thus far. You can't abandon one facet of the game and then be shocked when when there is no rhythm when you go back to at the end of the game. You also have take into consideration that the Packers have a pretty defense. And the Colts have a decent secondary. It's not like they were playing against the Chiefs.

I see the double-naught spy is back. Bodine, Jethro Bodine.

September 18, 2008  08:43 AM ET

Also, Jackson scrambling is what kept them IN the Packers game when the defense gave up the two big plays and the special teams gave up the return. How many times did he get a first down with his feet? Is Gus Frerotte going to do that? Speaking of Gus Frerotte, how did he do in St. Louis last season? And he doesn't have anything REMOTELY close to Tory Holt in Minnesota.

BoBo, that's one scary pic.

Clowns are twisted people dressing in twisted ways.

September 18, 2008  09:04 AM ET

its about time that T-jack get benched.. hopefully now GUS will do better, (can't get much worse) and lead this team to a win

September 18, 2008  09:36 AM ET

He should change his first name...how about Joe Jackson?
