USC wait on Wright's legal problems

USC Coach Pete Carroll reiterated Wednesday he would take a wait-and-see approach regarding Shareece Wright's status in wake of the starting cornerback's legal problems. Wright entered a not-guilty plea through his attorney Wednesday to one felony count of resisting a police officer during a party he attended in his hometown of Colton over Labor Day weekend. His attorney said Wright had returned to Colton for a goodbye party for his friend Luis Alvarado, who, according to a mutual friend, was deployed by the Marines to Iraq on Wednesday. Neighbors had complained to Colton police about the party being loud, Juarez said, and officers arrived with a police dog, ultimately using a Taser on at least one of the partygoers. Although three individuals were arrested at the scene for resisting a police officer, Wright wasn't, but he was ultimately briefly detained by Colton police last week and was charged by the district attorney. Wright's attorney said the player was charged for not leaving his friend's home. The player told police he had a suspended driver's license -- which was confirmed at Wednesday's hearing -- and had been drinking. Ruben Morales, a friend of Wright, said Alvarado's mother told police she wanted Wright to spend the night at the party home, informing the officer, "He stays here."

The man trying to hold a brother down. They wanted him to drive off while drunk and with a suspended license so they could really bust him.

HOW CONVENIANT HE IS TAKING A WAIT AND SEE APPROACH NOW AFTER THEY PLAYED OHIO STATE GOOD JOB CARROL AND USC WAY TO BUILD FINE UPSTANDING CHARACTER

Is that a Alabama fan talking about upstanding character? That's a good one.

Sounds to me like Wright did the right thing. He admitted to not having a valid licenee and didn't drive after drinking. Alwarado's mom did the right thing as well by making him stay at her house. I don't know all the details of the party and what caused the office to use a taser and arrest 3 party goes. Maybe the party was a little too loud (why show up at a loud part with a police dog?), but attending a send off party for a friend to go fight in Iraq - no problem with that at all. I don't see anything that Wright did wrong here.

Absolutely! I guess a football player driving intoxicated with a suspended license would have been more appreciated by some. He did the right thing and if this is what happened, the DA has some explaining to do. Thanks for your support GTryan0505. Are you a Tech Fan or a UGA fan? I am guessing GA Tech

Statement from USC: In regards to the suspension of Shareece Wright, the esteemed coach; Pete Carrol will break down the upcoming schedule and injury reports before determining future action.

My question is,,,,How did he get to the party? does that mean he drove there with his suspended license?????? And, if bad thigs just keep happening to the same person, then what does that tell ya?

That's a great point. Also, the more we are finding out about what actually happened, the better it looks for Shareece. He has eye witnesses to everything that took place. You would think the police would be a bit more lenient for a going-away party for a guy about to be shipped off to war. But it is Colton.

I'm a Retired Detective-Supervisor with the LAPD (23 yrs.). My wife has been a LAC Superior Court Judge for the past 22 yrs. From what I have read, this is nothing more than San Bernardino County covering their backsides. Police Rule #1: If you use force on someone, make sure you arrest him. This will help you to avoid getting a law suit against you. Later, the charge can be dismissed by the court, but they are a separate agency.

Tip: Patrol Officers normally have the least experience on a police department. Little experience equates to larger egos. Experienced COPS call this the "Wyatt Earp Syndrome." Wyatt Earp never backed down and neither do the aforementioned COPS. When told to leave - leave. Life's not fair.

September 18, 2008  03:54 PM ET

If he was supposed to sleep there, why should he leave? Basically that was his place of sleep for the night.

If my friend was leaving for Iraq and I was to stay there with him, i wouldnt leave either. This is not newsworthy, no crime was committed. The party can end and the party goers can leave, but who are the cops to try and make him leave?

This is what gives cops a bad rap.

Doug, you sound liek my cousin, he was a Sheriff's Deputy for 20 years. He swears 95% of all LEO's do it cause they want to be "big and bad with a badge." Some grow out of it, but most just wash out cause their ego gets them into big trouble.

For you dumb **** ripping Carroll and USC, PLEASE READ A STORY ENTIRELY before posting an ignorant misinformed comment. This kid was an upstanding citizen in Colton and was never arrested in the first place, as has been reported for the last two weeks (That's how old this story is and this is how late fannation has jumped on it with poor taste and presentation). And an Alabama fan (I'm assuming go tide is one) talking about bad about another program? Come on now folks, use the brain cell you still have.

This happens in every college town in America. I would hate to see this DA in State College, PA.

Why do coaches have any tolerance for athletes misbehaving. I think there should be zero tolerance period. I don't get any brakes if I do the same thing some talented athlete at a premier college gets; so neither should they.

Did you forget about all the OSU players that get away with anything they want to? Not trying to hate, but it's the truth.

Why don't you ask your local sports department...Maurice Clarett.

Didn't Troy Smith serve a one game suspension for taking some money as a freshman?

You need to understand Colton, San Bernardino County and being African-American there to understand the response to the party.
