Recruit picks UCLA over USC

Tyler Honeycutt, a 6-foot-8 senior forward from Sylmar who emerged over the spring and summer as one of the most improved high school basketball players in the nation, announced Wednesday that he would sign with UCLA. Honeycutt averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds as a junior, but he had no scholarship offers. Then he joined the Pump 'N Run club team and saw his stock soar. UCLA Coach Ben Howland and USC Coach Tim Floyd singled him out as a top recruit, and both went all-out trying to recruit him. Last weekend, Honeycutt attended the sold-out Ohio State-USC football game at the Coliseum in Floyd's final attempt to woo him.

I could not have said it better

I love how Basketball coaches are sending players to Football games to woo them. As if 90,000 are going to show up at a USC basketball game

Girls are definitely better at USC. He made the right choice if he's planning on being on campus for more than a year. UCLA has a constant stream of talent filtering into Pauly Pav.

Girls at USC are all the same. If you like variety and hotness....UCLA is unmatched.

If you can't get a job on your own and want to work for your buddy's dad...USC is the place to be!

He can play ball at UCLA and watch football over USC. Kinda makes sense to me.

haha, you can get a sales job on your own or you can get a real job through networking and the strongest alumni network outside of ND... if by "variety and hotness" you mean, homily and middle-class... UCLA puts USC and ASU to shame.

How is this big news in LA? Reverse the football and men's basketball and then it's a story.

How could he pick either over any ACC team? What a booger-eating moron!!!

September 18, 2008  07:06 PM ET

Regardling of who USC get, the TARHEEL will wipe the floor with them. U Heard me.

"Then he joined the Pump 'N Run club team..."

Am I the only one to find this quote amusing....

September 19, 2008  02:54 AM ET

Ok, so I lived around USC for a significant amount of time and attended UCLA...I have seen the girls on both campuses and I must say that the girls at UCLA are hotter. That was one of many reasons why I chose UCLA over USC. USC only has football and price of attendance (more expensive) over UCLA; other than that UCLA is scholastically, athletically, and aesthetically superior than USC. Those comments are based on fact, not opinion.

"How could he pick either over any ACC team? What a booger-eating moron!!!"

Is "booger-eating" considered witty in the ACC region? Need I say more. I must.....

If not for a college with better history, he probably didn't want to hear Dick Vitale **** and kiss ACC butt for his whole college tenure. Go Bruins!!!!!

September 19, 2008  03:57 AM ET

Before anyone questions my typing skills, it was meant to say "hear Dick Vitale kiss ACC butt."

I'm pretty sure that "booger-eating" probably isn't considered witty anywhere outside of the 7th grade. Since he was dumb enough to pick UCLA over any ACC school, I figured I would try to speak down to his level. Dickie V kisses ACC butt because he recognizes that it is the superior conference.

And let's not pretend like Steve Hartman doesn't try to give the NCAA championship to UCLA (or USC, depending on who is doing better) within the first month of the season. That goes for football as well...

UCLA = BUENO, el U$C = el Diablo

ACC=ESAD

Or maybe he wanted to attend a school where he can walk off campus and not get mugged> Or maybe the westcoast fits the lifestyle he wants, Or maybe he already knows the women in L.A. overall are hot! He can go to any college or high school game for some "eye candy"

Why would a recruit want to take a chance in a Hurricane/Typhoon area? With country backwood women? What kind of recreation is in North Carolina? Fishing, Square Dancing, Boating, Bar Hopping, what?
