Why Pistons haven't pulled off deal

Pistons president Joe Dumars discussed why there wasn't a major trade made during the offseason, and why the he still likes his team's chances. "It was definitely quiet from a public standpoint, but it wasn't quiet in terms of behind the scenes, on the phone, dealing with other teams. It's hard to get on the phone with teams. No. 1, to get people to pull the trigger, and No. 2, to get a deal you like. I don't know if that's what happened or not, if guys thought that or not, the ones who've been dealing for awhile, they should know they're not going to call Detroit and get us to do something silly. That's not what we've done over that last eight to nine years. I put it out there. If you're serious about doing a deal, give me a call. If you're not? Don't waste time calling."

I am glad the Pistons didn't make a deal for the sake of making a deal.

Everyone wondering why they haven't dealt Sheed and his contract should realize that the same reason we want to get rid of him, is the same reason no one else would want him. I still think our best bet will be to get a decent trade for Sheed's expiring contract, or use the expiring contract ourselves to land one of a free agent (this class will be loaded).

I think Dumars would feel more comfortable making a big/riskier move if Flip had been playing the younger guys more. Count on Curry to play Amir, Max, etc. much more, giving Joe a better feel for what this teams needs are in the future.

this is what makes joe great..he won't do a deal, just to do a deal...he'll get one when he can get what they need or want...smart guy...they are getting old though, so joe better start getting some youth in there, quick....

Dumars doesn't need to blow this team up. If he can add a piece or two, expect the Pistons to remain competitive.

September 18, 2008  11:18 AM ET

Detroit is at what I call the crossroads - doing nothing is cowardice, making a big trade is perilous and blowing up the team is not necessary.

Joe knows this - Boston, Cleveland and Philly will own their old legs for life and if they make a trade they may loose the priceless chemistry they have built over the years... So what is a GM to do?

Put on your thinking hat Joe and do something to beat the cycle... You are not alone though... San Antonio, Dallas, Phoenix are in the same boat... Good Luck!

I think part of the situation is that Dumars has higher regard for the players on the team than other GM's do. But if the other GM's thought Dumars was going to hold a fire sale, they were dead wrong.

I'm glad that Dumars is committed to only making good deals. And I am a little disappointed that it didn't happen this summer. But there is still time for action as the season progresses - up to trade deadline time!

I like the crossroads term Lostwill.......

No reason to blow the team up-
but they do need to slowly start mixing it up.
I am disappointed that they basically did nothing- Kwame is NOTHING

They should have gotten Rasheed out of there (and they may still do so)
But until they don't make the eastern finals......I wouldn't panic

Thanks JGB.... Sheed has to go or come off the bench... I like the fact that they are trying to add more youth into lineup but Kwame Brown man...It's like you go on a blind date and you wish you are blind...woosh

Because no one wants an Old Billups that played for 10 teams and only was good on the Pistons, he wasnt good on the raps, celts, nuggets, and where ever else he played. Then Sheed has anger issues. Who wants the 10 time league leader in tech's.

I really do think that the Curry hire is the closest thing to Joe D coming down and coaching. Joe D wanted to see his young talent more, now he will. I think he really wanted a chance to assess the young guys before making any moves. Plus, Joe D knows better than to make moves for the sake of making moves. I just think that young guys SEEM promising, but there are still enough question marks to warrant waiting... To get younger and build, we need to build around the young core we got, so lets give Joe a (half) season to take a good look at what the young guys can do against other team's front lines.

In JOE we trust.
Don't get rid of Sheed - you will regret it...

September 19, 2008  05:43 AM ET

Old as they can be....they will still NOT win that championship. Once is enough last 2004, but that was it.....

September 19, 2008  07:55 PM ET

Yes this is why he's one of the best!!! They still need to make a move though, they need a truly athletic scorer!!!!

September 20, 2008  03:29 PM ET

They didn't pull off a trade simply because the offers they got must've been weak.

A T&R on this isn't exactly needed.

But they'll trade guys before the trade deadline, most probably Sheed, as he's going to be a free agent in 09.

September 20, 2008  03:30 PM ET

But they still have the team to get to the Eastern Conf Finals

And after all that, they're still better than your team. So what does that tell you?

Listen you morons! Why do you hate on a team that has been the second most successful team in the last seven years? I'll bet you can't boast that about the team you follow!!! Suns; first round exit... Mavericks; first round exit... Lakers; first final appearance since pistons whooped that a**. Boston; first time in playoffs in a few years. The list goes on and on. Only San Antonio can boast a better record over that period.
