Insiders: Giants to retain GM
William Neukom will have many important items on his agenda when he becomes the Giants' managing general partner Oct. 1, but it appears his to-do list will not include a general manager search. Numerous team insiders say they expect Neukom to retain Brian Sabean for the final year of his contract. They stressed that no decisions have been finalized ahead of Neukom's official ascension to the No. 1 chair, but he is leaning strongly toward retaining Sabean for a 13th season as general manager.

Sabean has done some good things for the Giants. He now needs to keep the pitcher they have unless he can unload Zito, then pick up a couple of sluggers via free agency and the Giants will be back on top.

The Giants will not succeed as long as Sabean's in charge, they only did those few years because Bonds was playing in a league of their own.

Sabean's successes were under Dusty Baker on teams filled with guys juicing (Matt Williams, Glenallen Hill, Barry Bonds, Rich Aurelia, Ellis Burks, Benito Santiago, etc.). If one were to take a look at the direction the club has taken in the last 4 years, it is clear that this organization has neither a plan nor the farm system to rebuild. Sabean's "banner" signing in the last 4 years, Rowand, has as many "caught stealing--4" stats as outfield assists. Sabean's continued preference for aged veterans (Aurelia, Vizquel, Roberts, etc.) has hampered player development and stunted any impetus for a progressive rebuilding since 2005. It is going to take someone more disciplined and shrewd than Sabean to make the Giants anything more than the basement dwellers of the N.L. West. Were it not for Lincecum, this team could very well be flirting with a 100 loss season in 2008, without much hope for the future. Sabean has to be held accountable... and looking for a new job in some other team's scouting dept.

Ownership had a huge part to play in that deal. They wanted a face of the franchise to replace "the other Barry" so they went wayyyyy out on a limb to get him. Now that Magowan has stepped down, it'll be interesting to see what Sabean can do without the proverbial ownership leash around his neck
