Report: Lions met with Alexander

According to published reports, former Pro Bowler Shaun Alexander was one of several running backs to meet with the Lions on Tuesday. Alexander, a former Seattle Seahawks star, worked out for the coaching staff at the team's practice facility. Former Chicago Bears runner Cedric Benson, a first-round draft pick in 2005, and free-agent Vernand Morency, who previously played for the Packers, were also in town to meet with coaches and front office personnel. Reports say that the signing of any player is not on the immediate agenda because the Lions are happy with their running backs and are only building a "short list'' in case of injury.

The Lions should have a whole team of washed up Runningbacks. Put Benson at QB, Morency at WR and Alexander at TE. The Lions wouldn't do as bad as the're doing right now.

I forget, did Kitna make a prediction this year?

September 18, 2008  08:10 AM ET

alexander probably is done. as someone mentioned before, shaun was a great starter but not exactly great at anything a RB lower on the depth chart is required to do.

I though some team would give him a chance, what a shame he was the best RB in league once and now your not even playing. Well maybe he might have a little in the tank left we will see what happen.

Washed up Runningbacks??? Hahahaaa, RB's are what makes teams go,
wonderful thinking Matt boy!! Bravo!!! Whos blocking?

September 18, 2008  10:22 AM ET

I realize that Alexander is past his prime.......but they would you even considering adding Benson if you could add Alexander to the roster instead??

September 18, 2008  11:22 AM ET

Wow isn't this story a microcosm of the inept Lions organization.
We can???t block. We can???t tackle. We can???t throw to our receivers.
So what should we do???
Sign some washed up Diva running back.
Classic Matt Millen.

I think that Benson would be worth a try because he is still relatively young and when being a compliment to a faster back he did alright. Look at what him and Thomas Jones did...It could be the same thing with Kevin Smith.

Detroit needs all the help they can get.

September 18, 2008  12:18 PM ET

I wonder if Tatum Bell stole his luggage too!

September 18, 2008  02:00 PM ET

I wish Detroit would just commit to K Jones as their #1 RB. By the way, I happen to own him in a league ......

September 18, 2008  02:48 PM ET

Glad to hear you have him in a league Tampa Bay Redskins.... maybe you should check out his player profile because #34 Kevin JONES is no longer a Lion. He was cut after the 07 season. He is a Chicago Bear playing behind Matt Forte. The Lions feature back is now #34 Kevin SMITH.

Soooo, seeing as how yo have NOOOO idea what team your fantasy players are on, I figure you may be easy to beat in fantasy football, we should be in the same league, I could use a few easy wins.

They can't commit because the defense sucks always leaving them in passing situations. Shaun gives them a kind of washed up veteran help that could probably do wonders for the passing game.

commit to the run that is

Hate to blow your bubble... but Jones got dumped, plays for the Bears now...

Phone call from Cedric to Clarrett "Hey buddy, you really need to submit an application to Matt Millen", "Yeah, man, but I never played in the NFL", "Don't Matter, I bombed in Chicago, just put down that an NFL scout thought you had upside at one point in your career, it worked for me","I think I will once I sober up enough", "Oh, you don't even have to sober up, I didnt"

Anybody want to buy a pre-owned pro football team. Cheap. Terms available on request. Potential unknown since it has never been tested. Only viewed by little old ladies on Sunday on the way home from church.

September 18, 2008  05:00 PM ET

I think they should just sign all the washed up running backs and play them all every other down...
