Cubs to extend Piniella
The Cubs appear poised to offer manager Lou Piniella a contract extension at the end of the season. The team already has had preliminary talks with him, but the issue has been tabled until the offseason, Cubs chairman Crane Kenney said. General manager Jim Hendry also might be in line for an extension.

Good for him and the Cubs- they don't get many seasons like this... Kinda like one of those 100 year storms...

This is pretty much a no-brainer. I would think the Cubs would just have to think about names like Dusty Baker, Don Baylor and Jim Riggleman, and they would do whatever it takes to keep Lou at Wrigley

And they should, Remember when cubs fans thought Sweet Lou was too hard on the team? He is a great baseball man.

Keep Lou, but get rid of Larry Rothschild, the pitching coach. Putting aside all the injuries they have experienced, Cub pitchers throw way too many balls and work far into the count.

I like his attitude, even when he was with the Yankess.

I love those water commercials. To me they are very funny. But they NEED to get this deal done for Sweet Lou. Do we really think this would have happened if Baker was still here?

Bottom line "Sweet Lou" - "win now" or go back to Seattle or the Yankees or Cincy - whoever will take you !!!

He's good for the Cubs. Hopefully he can take them all the way.

Lou has done an admirable job. While he inherited a team coming off of 90+ losses, he also inherited a team that added Ted Lilly, Alfonso Soriano, Mark DeRosa, Daryl Ward, and Jason Marquis, as well as an extended Aramis Ramirez & a soon after extended Carlos Zambrano. He took a team with a lot of new faces, a lot of question marks (rotation, bench, catching, and CF), and unproven players (Theriot, Cedeno, Fontenot, Marmol, Guzman, etc.) with the directive to turn around a franchise. In his 2 years, the Cubs have won back-to-back N.L. Central Divisional titles. While one can argue about the payroll infusion and the notion of 'buying talent,' nobody can argue with the success he has had. Lou has earned an extention, and he should be allowed to retire a Cub... whenever he wants to. He's been more successful than his 5 predacessors combined.

"...get rid of Larry Rothschild, the pitching coach. Putting aside all the injuries they have experienced, Cub pitchers throw way too many balls and work far into the count."
Larry Rothschild has been blamed for everything from the high pitch counts under Dusty Baker to the injuries of pitchers to the high walk totals many of his pitchers have allowed. The fact remains that in terms of overall performance, Rothschild's pitchers have been quite impressive overall in 2007-2008. He is unlikely to be going anywhere anytime soon. A team ERA of 3.81 is phenomenal... Larry has earned his pay and then some.
