Pistons make $15M offer to Maxiell

The Pistons have offered Jason Maxiell a three-year extension worth approximately $15 million. Should he leave that contract on the table, he would play out the final year of his contract this season (earning $1.87 million) and become a restricted free agent -- which means the Pistons could match any contract offer to Maxiell. It's a win-win situation for the Pistons. Either they lock up a key reserve player through 2012, or they have a hungry player fighting for a contract this season with the power to match any other team's offer the following summer.

take the deal bro. its fair

Intersting......
It's a low but fair offer to a very good bench player
If he takes it ......it will enable him to stay on a good team and compete for a ring
If he waits- I think some team will give him more $

It's a solid offer, but he should wait. First, Maxiell has double-double potential. Second, he's the only big in that frontcourt who can change the pace of the game with hustle. Third, Wallace and McDyess aren't getting any better, while Johnson is still not ready. There should be more money for him next year.

Detroit will match any offer made to Maxiell. Unless he assumes a starting role, and puts up some big numbers, the money on the table is more than fair.

September 18, 2008  06:34 PM ET

He should take the money.....he is 6'7"........a good PF/C but 5 million is fair....he could get a little more but at 6'7".....its going to be for a weak time...then he'll get exposed....he maybe good with Sheed and others around but by himself....hmmmmm we dont know

Detroit will most likely match any offer made by another team especially if they succeed in moving Rasheed before the end of this season as they obviously plan to. For now, Joe Dumars is living up to his reputation of being fiscally responsible or cheap. Dyess is agagin fast. Maxiell has been an steadily improving player for Detroit the past couple of seasons. They will retain him.

People forget the big stars who are going to be on the market next year. If someone were to pay $10 mil a year, they have a lot of options to choose from. Being that not a whole lot of teams are going to spend big (2010 market is huge... LeBron, Wade, Bosh, etc.), it seems like the Pistons took into account next season's market.

Next season he will probably get a $7 mil offer, if any. So if he signs, Pistons pay $15 mil for three years. If Maxiell doesn't sign, and gets a $7 mil offer, they still pay about $15 mil for three years. Now let's say they sign him to the offer $7 mil to start off. Then the Pistons would have paid $21 mil for the first three years. Dumars is a pretty intelligent risk-taker.

Maxiell, Stuckey and Prince are the future cornerstones of this franchise.

Everyone else should be viewed as tradable, at this moment.

Oh, Kwame Brown is also a cornerstone... ha, not really.
