Toronto FC eyeing Canadian

It's beginning to look like Toronto FC's long-promised designated player might come wrapped in a big red maple leaf. TFC director of soccer Mo Johnston made the strongest statement yet on the subject when ask if he had been looking at a DP on his recent trip to Brazil. "Right now we are looking at a Canadian," he said. But the market for a high-profile Canadian currently playing in the top levels of soccer are pretty slim. It would be much easier to mark who would not be available. A player such as Manchester United's Owen Hargreaves would be all but impossible, let alone prohibitively expensive, to pry away from the English Premier League. There's Paul Stalteri, who currently is on loan to Fulham from Tottenham, but as talented as he may be, he doesn't exactly fit the mold of superstar player. And besides, he has bad-mouthed BMO Field several times, making his playing in Toronto doubtful even as a roster player. The big fish that has everybody talking though, is Deportivo La Coruna midfielder Julian de Guzman, a 27-year-old Toronto native who has impressed everyone -- especially Johnston and TFC coach John Carver -- with his play in Spain.

NO!!!! DeGuzman has been fantastic for Deportivo. He's such a lynchpin in the midfield and he keeps on improving. DeGuzman should stay in Europe for a few more years.

Yeah, it would be hard to se De Guzman going to TFC at this point. Not only from a De Guzman career standpoint, but also because Depo would prob want a 8 MM euro or so transfer for him. I don't think TFC is in a position to both bid on him and pay him a high salary.

Stalteri seems like the person I would think they'd target.

The term "superstar" is all relative to the competition. I am a superstar playing basketball against midgets. Stalteri is a big name in Canadian soccer. It won't be DeGuzman.

Ya, it would be a tough sell, but a HUGE pickup for Toronto. HUGE!!

September 19, 2008  12:23 PM ET

Maybe it will be De Rosario?

Kinda seems like a marketing move, all they wanted is a Canadien? seems like they should be going after the best player that they can sign to fill the designated player slot.

I can think of worse choices to fill the DP slot than de Guzman, Canadian or not. He'd be a great pick up for any team!

de Guzman is a difference maker on the pitch and - I say this as both a Canadian and TFC season ticket holder - I don't agree that the same could be said for Stalteri.

Maybe Josh Simpson fro K'Slautern. I mean he's not a "star." To me, the most promising Canadian right now is Friend--and he's staying at M'Gladbach...

I think it'll be Stalteri...regardless of how he feels about the field turf, he's obviously not in high demand in Europe so this might be swan song to make a few quid before hanging them up. I'm sure Spurs would let him go on a free. Besides, TFC will need a full-back next season since Wynne is all but gone in the January window. He would have been gone in August, but they didn't want to lose both him and Edu at the same time. DeRosario is already under MLS contract so they'd have to trade for him. Besides, he's already hinted that he wants to take a shot at Europe, and had MLS not blocked the move, he would have been gone in August. Maybe when he gets back from Europe he'll come home.

Stalteri may hate BMO Field but he makes the most sense.

de Guzman isn't leaving Deportivo.

September 21, 2008  11:49 AM ET

It's not Stalteri. That guy isn't even worth DP money.

Most DP moves are marketing driven (unfortunately). For now it's the surest return for investors. Until they realize that DP's should be used for wins exclusively, you're gonna get these types of headlines; 'we're going for a Canadian'. Ha.
