Auburn to students: Please don't boo

Auburn University has a message for its students about Saturday's game against LSU: Please don't boo undefeated and No. 10 Auburn. The dean of students, Johnny Green, sent a mass e-mail this week urging the student body to show good sportsmanship when No. 6 LSU visits Jordan-Hare Stadium. It read in part: "First, please join me by agreeing to demonstrate your support for, and not criticism of, our football team. That means no booing! Remember, the team isn't trying to lose the game -- the players work hard all spring and during fall camp to be ready to compete in the S.E.C." The message followed Auburn's 3-2 win at Mississippi State last week, a victory that left fans grumbling about the lack of points from Auburn's new spread offense.

That's just sad. No other word to expain it. Just... Sad...

September 19, 2008  08:55 AM ET

A lot of times, fans have no idea of the work players put in during drills, practices, two-a-days. But at the same time, a lot of fans (students) aren't going to school for free, so they don't care.

The one sure fire way to guarantee booing if you get down...

September 19, 2008  09:24 AM ET

Every student should reply to the Email, requesting that the football team not suck then...

September 19, 2008  10:31 AM ET

We on our way to Barn town to whoop some ****!!!!!

I'm glad ESPN primetime has picked up what has been absolute WARS between LSU and Auburn recently. Should be another good game, LSU wins by 10 though.

PITIFUL that the university sent a letter like this out, PITIFUL.

September 19, 2008  11:35 AM ET

Booing is part of sports. For Auburn to send a message like that out is just ridiculous. However, the crowd should feel free to boo the home team loudly Saturday, as my beloved Bayou Bengals, the REAL SEC Tigers (No War Eagle here, just good ole Mike the Tiger), take it to Auburn! On October 23rd, I will be shouting for Auburn (My Tigers don't play until the 25th, game of the year vs UGA) to pound WV! That's what makes SEC football great!

September 19, 2008  11:47 AM ET

They are going to be BOOing, when Ricky Jean Francois is demolitioning AU's offensive front, and Charles Scott is bruising AU's deffensive front. Ha, Chaz Ramsey claims he is hurt, he is just scared from what he did last year to, Dorsey. Chaz is scared of RJF picking him up, and using him as some toothpick. Because RJF needs one after he has done jumped up in the air, and swallowed yall's lil Hawk flying around.

September 19, 2008  11:59 AM ET

Maybe they were booing the offensive coordinator and the new scheme, but not the players. Just a thought

September 19, 2008  12:02 PM ET

Chaz Ramsey is a coward. karma is a bit*h

September 19, 2008  12:03 PM ET

haha, everyone above hit it on the nose. what's next, is the dean going to tell the students not to drink before the game?

September 19, 2008  12:25 PM ET

He should have sent a memo to ask the male Auburn fans to please not wear those sissy orange pants to the game Saturday.

September 19, 2008  12:58 PM ET

I guess Auburn's anticipating a pretty poor performance on Saturday, then. That's sad.

I definitely think fans have to apply a different standard to collegiate athletes than they would to pro athletes, but there's nothing wrong with letting a team know when they're letting the fans down. The coaches can let them down with timid or poor playcalling, and players can let them down by dogging it. This is only magnified when you're ranked as high as Auburn. If a Top-10 team can't get a touchdown on a team that lost to Louisiana Tech... yeah, that's pretty boo-worthy.

LSU-Auburn games are always good, though, so hopefully this one follows in that tradition.

September 19, 2008  01:00 PM ET

While they're at it, they should tell them not to do drugs or have unprotected sex.

September 19, 2008  01:12 PM ET

absolutely pathetic for the university to send a message like that to their students. Is he not familiar with the concept of free speech?

September 19, 2008  02:00 PM ET

Thanks dean of students, Johnny Green

You just told me who to bet on tomorrow.

September 19, 2008  02:11 PM ET

"That means no booing!"...BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

you've got to be kidding me! Okay since College football is such an honorable sport and we should feel sorry for these poor kids who work so hard and do not get paid...then, can we maybe cut the ticket prices to the game?

If I were an Auburn fan, and I paid the market value for a ticket to this game...and Auburn only put up 3 points...Not only would I boo, but I'd streak the field and sack the Auburn QB.

Hey Dynasty! Enjoy the game brother! I'm sure LSU will do just fine. I'll be flipping to the game during the UGA vs. ASU contest. Who in the hell scheduled both these games to be on Saturday night!!!!

You can thank ESPN for the game schedules! I'll definitely be pulling for Georgia tomorrow to beat ASU. Good luck!

I will enjoy the game. I have a good feeling about our chances tomorrow.

September 19, 2008  02:56 PM ET

Yeah of course you better be pulling for UGA to win, So it could be another game with each having rankings in the top 10.

September 19, 2008  04:30 PM ET

Rory,
Just stick with LSU-AU. UGA will walk over ASU. Auburn fans, you guys need to revolt on the dean of students, run him outta town. Gotta love SEC football!

September 19, 2008  04:36 PM ET

Rory,

Hope you have your 10/25 tickets. Still planning the menu. Last year we were able to cook some chicken (South Carolina), some gator (Florida) and of course a pig (Arkansas), for the tailgating, but cannot bear the thought of cooking a bulldog :-) Whatever we cook, you guys are welcome to stop in and eat, drink and get rowdy!
