Millen: Lions have my back

He heard the "Fire Millen!" chants during Sunday's 48-25 loss to Green Bay. He knows fans are already jumping off the bandwagon because of the Lions' 0-2 start. That's their choice," Matt Millen said Thursday. Millen nodded toward the coaches and players on the practice field. "It's not their choice," Millen said. "They're not jumping." Though he said owner William Clay Ford has high expectations and is frustrated -- and though he took full responsibility for the state of the team -- Millen indicated no changes are imminent. Millen said he believes in Rod Marinelli more than ever before because Marinelli has remained consistent amid adversity. He said he still believes in the coaching staff and players -- and that if the Lions just do what they've been doing, they will win this year.

There are two ways to end the "Fire Millen" chants.....either put a better team on the field, or make the team so bad fans don't show up anymore.....it appears this braintrust has chosen the latter.

I can't believe Matt Millen is still the GM of the Lions. Maybe Mr. Ford is trying to have the Goverment buyout his Lions & his car company? & Mr. Bush is dumb enough to do it!

It is not Millen's fault he was given a job that he cannot do. He is what he is. It is the owners fault for not accepting the fact he put the wrong guy in charge and doing something about it.

September 19, 2008  08:10 AM ET

OK, so we know who has Millens back. The real question is who took his brain and will they give it back.

September 19, 2008  08:10 AM ET

the question isn't whether the Lions have Millen's back, it's what does Millen have on Ford that he's using for blackmail to keep his job.... seriously, the guy got an extension, I wish I could be utterly incompetent at my job and get more money for it

September 19, 2008  08:13 AM ET

BillieverZ28.. I've been saying that for about 4 years now.. how the hell does Millen keep a job? He's gotta have pictures of the owner pleasing farm animals or something. It doesn't make any sense.

Can Lions fans all agree to give a big thanks but no thanks to Gardner White for buying all the remaining tickets? The fans aren't taking it any more. Let the pocket books of Ford hurt. If he wants to give us inferior product, lets take away our revenue.

If I attend a Lions game, I have vowed to buy a ticket off of a poor schmuck who bought season tickets already. Please, no one buy any unsold tickets. Ford is making a mockery of us fans by keeping Millen around. No more.

September 19, 2008  08:19 AM ET

The worst thing is, I predict the Lions will look awful, but then win the last 5 games of the season, keeping Millen around for another crappy year.

The only acceptable outcome is playoffs this year. Any thing less is a continuation of failure.

September 19, 2008  08:23 AM ET

Hey Matt. Do the Lions a favor and resign voluntarily.

September 19, 2008  09:20 AM ET

The question is, does Millen have the Lions back?

September 19, 2008  09:33 AM ET

talking about a guy who should have been fired long ago...this dude takes the cake

September 19, 2008  09:46 AM ET

yep a 5- 11 squad with a two game winning streak in december and all will be fine WILLIAM CLAY FORD LAND bring on another prommising year in 2009

September 19, 2008  09:47 AM ET

Packer fans love Millen....We hope the Ford family keeps him another 10 years!!!!!

September 19, 2008  10:00 AM ET

"Millen said he believes in Rod Marinelli more than ever before because Marinelli has remained consistent amid adversity." Yep, consistently bad and consistently losing...kind of like Millen, no wonder he believes in Marinelli...birds of a feather.

September 19, 2008  10:07 AM ET

"if the Lions just do what they've been doing, they will win this year."......... ooooooookay......

Does he know they've gotten blasted in both games??

September 19, 2008  10:42 AM ET

The question about Millen really is, Is he that stupid or that arrogant? A blind monkey could do a better job than Millen. He has absolutely no sense of talent evaluation and he keeps hiring inferior coaches because nobody in their right mind would work for him. He constantly remarks how he does not care what the fans think. Wonderful. Also, he keeps saying that he takes full responsibility for the failures of the Lions under his watch. That is just great Millen. We already know that it is all your fault. How big of you to remind of us of that.

September 19, 2008  10:45 AM ET

Yeah Matt they have your back, also your head, and soul,
they own you dude! WR's and Now over the hill Running Backs!
isn't their other players on the team, linemen, blockers?
Kitnas days are also numbered, lose to S.F. and it will (the mob) get worse!

September 19, 2008  10:46 AM ET

Ford has high expectations? Really?

September 19, 2008  11:31 AM ET

"if the Lions just do what they've been doing, they will win this year." May only be 1 or 2 games but by golly they'll squeek one or two in there...what an idiot.

September 19, 2008  11:40 AM ET

Millen is right. He's a visionary.

Just watch... after reading his latest comments, the Lions will play much better, win NFC North, do major damage in the playoffs and will reach the NFC championship game.

Ford's will be so impressed that they will give Millen a 5 year extension.

Millen will then inspire the Lions so much that they will win the Super Bowl next year.
