Flyers defenseman Derian Hatcher will be placed on the injured reserve for the start of the 2008-09 NHL season due to a to a possible career-threatening right knee injury. Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren announced on Thursday that Hatcher will not participate in the start of training camp Saturday and that the 36-year- old will take some time to contemplate retirement.

We will miss his gritt and leadership.

I can't think of anything nice to say about this guy. He was too slow beforehand, the last thing he can afford to lose is any of his, ahem, "speed."

September 19, 2008  08:30 AM ET

He hasn't been a major factor every since he left Dallas in '03. Steady in Philly, but nothing like he used to be. I think Detroit was smart to buy him out when they did.

But man, he is a big **** guy - He used to punish people with monster hits. He'd come into each season weighing 240-250. His brother was the better talent though.

It's been coming for the guy. I loved watching him play in Dallas. It's time to ride into the sunset Hatch. I wish him luck.

Career? What career? I didn't realize being a pilon qualified as a career!

September 19, 2008  09:07 AM ET

kinda sh*tty to see him sit out . . . . . altough it came as to no surprise for him and the Flyer organization that this was coming . . . . gonna miss them mean spirited checks he delivered night in , night out . . . . . . . . Guenin should be his replacement in the "nasty" department . . . . . . .

September 19, 2008  09:27 AM ET

OK! OK! I'll admit it! He was a "nasty" pylon. Any player that run into him or tripped over him got hurt!

I was with you until your "retraction" I always thought he was a big waste. A guy his size should do more. He was the defence version of Eric Libdros, with a touch more heart though (not tough to do)
I remember his cr*p out in the Olympics in Nagano
good riddance.

I concur 100%. A slightly improved Dana Murzyn but much meaner.

Teams that have Hatcher use him to save $$ on stickhandling drill equipment.

I can't believe he is only 36.........

September 19, 2008  10:11 AM ET

I agree with Yoda on this one. He never did anything good when he left Dallas. Detroit was smart to let him go.
Too bad his knee is gone, he seemed to show a little bit of resurgence late last playoffs.

Well said my needle covered friend.

Say what you want haters. He did GREAT things for the Fly guys. After Desardin left, the locker really lacked in true veteran leadership, especially among the defense.

Hatcher may not be the fastest, the best shooting, but he played with intelligence and passion. The man has more heart than the majority of the NHL. He plays and always did, because he loves the game.

Take care Big Darien.

And the rest of you can go suck the big one.

September 19, 2008  10:50 AM ET

I've always been a Hatcher fan. However, it's time for him to focus on the boat racing hobby he and his brother have in MI. Good guy but sadly he just can't compete at the high level anymore.

I always wondered what was up with his "twitch". Basil Fawlty would have had a hard time talking to him.

One of the things I hate about modern society is that if you say something about someone, you are instantly labled a "hater"..(not a real word by the way)
I have hated The Flyers as long as I can remember, but one of the guys I always liked was Desjardins, (even to the point of actually knowing what his name is...ha ha) He played with class, and Hatcher couldn't and didn't follow that up remotely. You say he wasn't the fastest, the best shooter and all the rest of it, so then that reduces him to a very large...speed bump.
And to your closing statement...I guess you missed that "right to an opinion thing", but we have it here, so piss off

Seconded.

He was/is a goon. When a man his size would challenge him i.e. Georges Laraque, he would back down like a little girl. When it came to bullying smaller players, he was a pro. Intelligence? Paleeze! One must possess it to play with it. Once a Dbag, always a Dbag. I agree with Spiny...Good riddence.
