St. John's not in Calipari's future

John Calipari wasn't in the building 30 seconds before the question was asked. Or was it a demand? "Would you take the St. John's job," a frustrated passer-by said. "Please?" Calipari rolled his eyes, laughed and moved on. No time for speculation. Not anymore. St. John's has a coach. Memphis does, too. "Right now, I'm so committed to what we're doing at Memphis, I don't even have time to think about it," said Calipari, the former Nets coach in town Friday for a star-studded coaching clinic at Manhattan College.

You don't go from Memphis to St. John's. That is just silly.

king- your comment is silly.......

Who the hell is memphis?
it has been good for the last few years because of Calipari.
Their conference is awful, there is no real history to the program & Cal can recruit kids from ANYWHERE

Cal is a NY guy, St Johns is a historical program & in a power conference.
He would be PERFECT for the Johnnies -

On the flip side- he's probably living like a king out there & has no pressure from the NY media......I personally would stay in Memphis- much easier life......

But in the end he's a coach, a competitor and if he could rebuild St Johns.... a once top tier program....he would be the king of NY

St. John's has been irrelevant since Chris Mullin and Walter Berry.

Calipari was born in Pennsylvania. Where are you getting that he is a NY guy?

I am not totally disagreeing.....
although they were decent when Artest was there in late 90's

My point is that St Johns COULD be relevant again-
with the right coach.
And that Memphis would be NOTHING without Cal at the helm.

And thirdday......
what is your question?
can you deny that St Johns isn't a historical program ?
and the big east isn't one of the power coferences ?

jgb, I'm just saying that although they've had a historical program, it seems as if their prominence has been overshadowed by others, especially lately. I must admit, St. John's has done well, at times very well, I would consider a program like UCLA under John Wooden or Kentucky ten years ago something historical. Memphis has been fielding consistently talented squads more recently it sems. Anyway, I'm not saying anything bad about Cal; you're right, he has built something at Memphis--actually seems to have brought them respect. I just don't know that he should go. If he does, well, I suppose he could be the panacea for St. John's woes. Take care.

With the right coach anyone can be good.

I think I read this article a little over a year ago, except the coache's name was Billy Gillespie. He, too, said something about being committed to Texas A&M. See how well that has turned out so far for BillyG?
