La Russa: Cubs should celebrate title

Should the Cubs uncork champagne and celebrate if and when they win the National League Central, even though the understood goal is winning the World Series? "Absolutely," says an expert on this subject, St. Louis manager Tony La Russa. Since becoming White Sox manager in 1979, La Russa's teams have won 13 division titles or wild-card playoff spots and 13 other postseason series, including two World Series. "I definitely believe celebrating [each step], but especially this one [for the division]. It took six months [to win] and every time you win, you get another step closer [to a World Series championship]."

Coming from a true champ himself.......

Is this really a story?? Of course they'll celebrate winning the division. If they didn't, they'd be the first team in the history of baseball not to.

No that doesnt make sence.----------^

The Cubs should NOT celebrate with champagne and revelry. They havent accomplished anything that they didnt do last year. Would you consider last year a success? YES they won the division but who gives a s***? They were swept and sent home. Would you consider 2003 a success when they squandered a 3-1 NLCS lead? Well neither would I. The Cubs should not celebrate until they FINISH the goal. The goal is the WORLD SERIES not the National League Central Division.

Get a clue. If you have been a Cubs fan for longer than 3 years you would realize this right now means nothing.

Dont bring up the past, you call yourself a Cubs fan?

This is a way different team then those previous years. I been a Cubs fan for years.....its still a nice goal that should be acknowledged. Not the main goal, but a goal..so why not celebrate?

Tony is a real class act. Like he said, I would celebreate each step of the way.

September 20, 2008  04:52 PM ET

Obviously they should celebrate it :/

September 20, 2008  05:17 PM ET

I think Tony just wants to get hammered!

What makes many laugh on this site is they say they are fans but they really trolls pretending to be fans. Wonders how many friends in rl they have.

September 21, 2008  12:13 AM ET

Of course they should. Anyone who would say they shouldn't has no idea how difficult it is to win a division title, IMO.

September 21, 2008  08:43 AM ET

Sure they should. Winning your division after 162 games is a big thing. The world series and divisional play offs are separate from winnint the division your in..Enjoy CUBBIES...you deserve it

he was probably behind the wheel when he made this comment...

September 21, 2008  10:27 AM ET

We all celebrated...but we all know that this is not the main goal...it's just means that we are now closer to acheiving it....the Cubs have all the right people to make this happen...and as I die-hard..."I bleed Cubbie-blue"...now the countdown begins...11 wins to the promise land.......GO CUBBIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

September 21, 2008  11:48 AM ET

I have seen quite a bit of Cubs futility and I say let them celebrate whenever they reach a plateau (or milestone for the Cubs).

LaRussa, shut up and coach.
