Fox not worried about sackless Peppers

Carolina Panthers coach John Fox isn't worried that defensive end Julius Peppers doesn't have a sack in the Panthers' first two games. "I think Julius has played exceptionally well this year," Fox said on Friday. "I've said this before. Way too much is made of sacks, way too much. I don't know how else to say it. Great players make Super Bowl runs and have only two sacks. It's a team game and there's more to it than sacks." Peppers, the team's all-time sacks leader with 56, had just 2.5 last season. He continues to be double- and sometimes triple-teamed. Also, Fox said the offensive style of the Panthers' first two opponents -- San Diego and Chicago -- might have played a role in Peppers' not getting to the quarterback. The Chargers and Bears both favor quick releases and play-action passes from their quarterbacks, rather than wide-open passing attacks. The last time the Panthers played at Minnesota (in 2006), Peppers had three sacks and five quarterback pressures.

From what I've seen he has played well. Sure it would be nice to have a few sacks by now but he has done his job. Like the story says, he has been getting plenty of attention from the opposing offenses. Also, I know it can be said for everyone but he gets held ALOT.

This is true metro. It's too early in the season to look for players to start racking up pro bowl numbers. And, like you said, with him getting plenty of attention, the other players need to step up and do their part.

let's see if the panthers hold to their offer and make peppers one of the highest paid DE in the NFL, if his statistical drought continues for a second season.

I gotta feeling they are going to wait another season and franchise him after this year...unless he goes off of course...

He'll get his sacks and his money....

September 20, 2008  12:45 PM ET

Fox said, he'll give him his sack, if he can't get any on the field.

Yeah, look at the price tag on getting Jared Allen to play for the Vikings. Way too much!!! I agree, way too much is made of sacks!!!

Although, your own sacks taken to the grocery store are in the spirit of GREEN.

Fox not worried about sackless Peppers is the best headline i've ever read. I'd be worried about Peppers not having a sack. You gotta have balls to play in the NFL.

He needs to hit the QB anytime he gets a chance but a few sanks would be nice before people start saying his career is done. He 's a great DE.

September 21, 2008  04:43 AM ET

I'd be worried if I didn't have a sack.
