Mavs expect coaching change to help Kidd

In nine days, the Mavericks will convene for the 2008-09 season, and if you're wondering what they have learned since the commotion that engulfed the team four months ago, it can be summed up easily. Change is good. They are referring to new coach Rick Carlisle. But they also believe the transition from Avery Johnson will show an earlier change -- trading for Jason Kidd -- was a smart move. Carlisle has three assistants who were not with the Mavericks last season: Terry Stotts, Dwane Casey and Tom Sterner. He also has Mario Elie, a holdover from Johnson's staff. Their job will start with Kidd, the trade-deadline addition who was supposed to take the Mavericks deep into the Western Conference playoffs. But Kidd and Johnson never meshed. Johnson's offense was a poor fit for Kidd's skills. That has to change.

No diminish skills is not a fit for any system!!! He's at the end of the road how could you expect him to carry a team to the title?????

has probably played the best basketball already!

That's right, blame Johnson. It's his fault that the Mavs went after a 35 year old point guard that can't shoot. Until the Mavs establish some type of low post game, it won't matter who the coach is, or who the point guard is. Maybe after watching the '09 playoffs on television, the message will hit home. Acquiring Kidd was like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. Erik Dampier is the Mavs problem, and Johnson knew this.

He played very well in the Olympics as a distributor. Hopefully he can continue playing that role this year.

Avery Johnson should not have been fired, though. He brought a healthy balance to that team that they hadn't seen in a long time. They should have traded Dirk instead of trading for Kidd though.

One thing no one has ever defied is age... yes the new coach can change the offense to utilize Kid's skill more... but at the end of the day... he can not keep up with the point guards in the West anymore... they are too young and fast for him... The mavs are in bad shape... There's no player on that team that strikes fear into anyone...

Has Kidd meshed with anyone in his career?

Why does everyone harp on the olympics, my grand child could win with that team. Lets get real hear, like someone said earlier in the post, this is not a team suited for kid, this team lacks a low post game, not to mention not very athletic (no one plays above the rim). Kidd is going to be at a loss for this team...Just look back at when he lost martin in jersey, that is when his game became suspect, and here its a glaring omission of what he lacks and what this team needs.

Wasn't Avery Johnson a point guard? Just saying.

Kidd was/is not the Problem. they play in the hardest Division.
The Problem was Howard and more likely E. Dampier..
They should have trade both long ago.
Avery was no longer the right Coach for that team.

at this point in his career, the only thing that will help kidd is a time machine.. he's gonna be tired by the playoffs, if not sooner.. his allstar days are far back in the rearview... i like kidd and i hope i'm wrong, but that's how it looks to me..

Your opinion resembles my own the closest of anyone yet.

1. I was and am a HUGE supporter of Avery but when Kidd came aboard it was like Avery got lost with the players he had. As one other person pointed out, he had Kidd posting up as a shooting guard! You have one of the most talented PASSERS who is a weak shooter as a PG yet you take the ball out of his hands and spot him up in the corner as a shooting guard. Uhhh....
2. For those who say Kidd's best days are behind him I have to ask, has ANYONE remotely indicated that they think Kidd is just now hitting his peak? There is no doubt that Kidd is beyond his peak. The Mavs didn't trade for him at his peak but as one of the best PGs in the game.
3. Howard and Damp are indeed problems for Dallas. We have no FORCE under the basket and Howard shows up when and if he wants. He also shows no commitment to his team, the game itself or even his country.

Dallas has many problems but the biggest is that they are in the toughest division in the NBA. Coach Carlisle can and should make a positive change in the Mavs and I DO believe that Kidd can play a good game. I know he won't miraculously turn into CP3 but his shot HAS to be made part of his game and I think it can be made part of it. If he shoots just enough to keep the defense honest then his other attributes will help the Mavs have a better showing than the end of last year.

There is No Way Carlisle and Kidd can co-exist on the same planet, never mind a basketball court - three months and one is traded or the other is fired !!!

The article is right. Kids do well when there is a change.
If the kids on the Mavs had trouble with Avery Johnson, perhaps a change in coaching is just what they need.

Jason Kidd would do well if Cuban would only surround him with the same players from the U.S. Olympic team.

Kidd is playing on name alone. He's toast.
