Why Astros agreed to Milwaukee venue

The angst of the Astros players and owner Drayton McLane is understandable, but they had to sign off on playing the Cubs last week in Milwaukee. With a host of Cubs fans present, Carlos Zambrano no-hit them, then Ted Lilly beat them, 6-1, with six more no-hit innings. The decision might very well cost the Astros a playoff spot. Many on the Astros side expressed anger about the situation, including McLane. So why did he agree? The games could have been played in Arizona or Minneapolis. "McLane took the best deal," said one National League official. "That's the story."

This is crazy. Both teams had no chance anyway. Who in the world would fire the manager only weeks before the end of the season? What does that tell your - "team"? Brewers will deserve to never make the playoffs after that lame move.

Gesh its like telling us the cubs told them to play in Mil. Gesh lets be real here.................Again the Cubs would have would have won any where they played.

Dude you are full of it! The games should not have been played at all coming of the tail of Ike. Players should not have been forced to fly and play on the same much less within 24-hours of after a hurricane blows in leaving over 2.0 million without power in just the greater Houston area alone. The games could have been played at the end of the season if needed. If memory serves me correctly the last time the 'stros were in Chicago they left after taking the series from the Cubs.

The Cubs are a bunch of whiners and I hope their hearts get ripped out again.

Look who's talking about being full of it! Don't blame us just because your owner was a dumbass, and waited until the last minute to make a damn decision. He KNEW a hurricane was heading towards Texas, and should have made contingency plans. But NOOOOO! He had to be an idiot, and the Astros and their fans were/are bitching and moaning about it. But instead of pointing the finger where it TRULY belongs, which is at Astros ownership, you are pointing it at us. We cannot, should not, and will not be held responsible for your owner being a ****ing moron. You want to **** and whine? Fine. But do not **** and whine to us, as we had nothing to do with YOUR owner being an idiot.

I'm an Astros fan who lives in Galveston County and I can tell you that Ike's path was so erratic that I don't really blame Drayton for waiting to decide not to play. On Tuesday everyone thought this was going to miss Houston and hit Corpus Christi, on Wednesday they said it was going to hit Matagorda Bay and Houston would suffer heavy rains and winds, and even Thursday they were saying Ike might take a possible turn to the north and again, Houston might be spared the worst of it. It wasn't until Friday morning that MILLIONS of people realized we were in trouble. That being said, it seems odd that of all the stadiums MLB plays in, Milwaukee was the only viable venue - I mean come on. Something else could have been done. The only person who's actions I was disappointed in was Zambrano's. Sure, he pitched a no-hitter, but considering the circumstances, I can honestly tell you, no one in Houston cared. In fact, when I went back to work Wednesday, Sept. 17, lots of people in the office didn't even know. We all had more important things to worry about. But here was Zambrano, spinning and pumping his fist, shouting "I guess I'm back!" Sure Carlos - you're back. Back to being a jerk. I guess he wasn't hurt as bad as he claimed when he was struggling. What a jerk. Way to take advantage of the situation Carlos. Congrats on your no-hitter. Everytime it's mentioned, there will be an asterisk about how the Astros landed only hours before the game after having to survive a hurricane that their friends, families, and city was literally still climbing out of. Way to go Carlos. Jerk.

Hey another "excuse" person, pathetic=you to!!

I am so sick of all of the complaining about these games. It is unreal. You agreed to the deal Astros. All I ever hear on Mike and Mike is how terrible it was and how the one hit over two games was because of how disoriented the team was. No, it was because of how well the Cubs were playing. They have been heads and shoulders above the rest of the NL for 80% of this season. All the hate and excuse making is disgusting.

I feel for the hurricane victims but the simple fact is this, the Stros always sit around until the last month of the season and then bust their ****. This year the Cubs put a stop to that and buried them. Next year, show up for the whole season and then you won't have this problem.

September 21, 2008  02:00 PM ET

I agree Jake, if you agreed to the deal, stop complaining. Having one hit in two games has nothing to do with the field you were playing on. In the end, it's a baseball field. The Astros should know how to play on one no matter where it is.

This isn't the first time Houston choked when it came to big games

Remember 2005 in the world series when the White Sox rolled over them in the world Series, even with some disputed calls that went against the White Sox (a HR in game 3 that was not a HR, an out on a stolen base attempt that the ump called safe, etc), and lets not forget when the Astro's cried because they had to have the roof open because MLB "forced" them to, when its written in the MLB rules when a roof must be open and closed(above or below 73 degree's or something like that, and it was only going to be 73 that night).

I do not care that Zambrano tossed a no hitter, I can't stand the Cubs, but I do respect what they have done the past 2 years though, and do hope they end the curse, but Houston did not play well for two games. Sure they can say that they only landed hours prior to the no hitter, but what about the next day? Thats like Cubs fans who still blame Bartman for costing them game 6 onthe NLCS in 2003, and even blame him for game 7, even though his so called interfewrence was in game 6, yet its his fault for game 7?

September 21, 2008  02:28 PM ET

If your owner didn't have a Decision Making Disorder, then other options would have been available. He tried to gamble and get the best deal for his club....he lost and so did the Astro's.

September 21, 2008  02:55 PM ET

Thank you T&R for making an 8 sentence paragraph in a 5 page story a headline. This is old news.

Oh, and to the crybaby from Texas. "What a jerk. Way to take advantage of the situation Carlos. Congrats on your no-hitter."

What's he supposed to do? Pitch underhanded? Quit crying already.

September 21, 2008  05:27 PM ET

Cubs' and MLB fans attacking any Houston Astros fan should be ashamed of themselves right now. Sure, our owner made a dumb decision; and sure, some fans are taking an irrational viewpoint on the matter, but can you blame them? The majority of Houston is still power-less, as most grocery stores and business still arent running.

Most out of towners fail to recognize this, because Ike is no longer getting as big of national coverage it originally had--which is understandable, but doesnt mean the doom is over. Many Houstonians, including myself, have evacuated and have nowhere to go but hotel reservation after hotel reservation.

So excuse us for being upset, but dont call us retarded, whiny, or idiots--any fanbase would be upset after such circumstances.

I also find it pathetic that it takes me, a teenage evacuee, to point this out to y'all. "ThisBudz4Me", "Mike3775", and "jake" among others should watch their hostility. Seriosuly, guys. This is f*cking rediculous.

September 21, 2008  06:13 PM ET

I, too, find the hostility ridiculous. From both sides. The Astro fans' displeasure should be directed at McLane. He made a bad decision. We lost.

Go 'Stros! Go Cubs!

ANYWHERE ELSE....... if they played in Fl, cali, philly etc...........The only cry baby is you. What happen with IKE is very sad. But to mix it with baseball at the moment is just teastelss and heartless. Just move on with your life. Hope al is well down there.

Dear Mr. MenagerieJr. your comments are once again full of disdain, innuendo, and "shadenfreude" !!!

September 22, 2008  12:15 AM ET

Not only did the Astros agree to this deal, but they got a grand total of 1 hit in those 18 innings. The Astros absolutely stink, and they absolutely stunk in those two games. Blaming it on the stadium/crowd/city is comical.

September 22, 2008  01:14 PM ET

I feel horrible for the people of Houston. But blaming the Cubs for the situation? They were not part of the decision making process. It is squarely on the owner of the Astros. He took the best deal for him, not necessarily for the team. I wish the people of the impacted areas the best of luck. There are bigger things to worry about than baseball.
