Cubs want to extend Piniella, Hendry

Cubs Chairman Crane Kenney said contract extensions for general manager Jim Hendry and Piniella are a strong possibility. "They're here for next year, and I'm going to keep teeing up good decisions for the organization for the long-term, whether it's re-signing (Carlos) Zambrano, getting (Rich) Harden," Kenney said. "And really, Lou and Jim are no different than the players. They're talent for the organization, and we should do smart, long-term arrangements for them. Ultimately I'll be teeing it up and a new owner will be saying yes or no. But Jimmy deserves an extension, and so does Lou."

If the Cubs suffer some unforseen tragic collapse in the play-offs (say of Bartman game proportions), do they feel the same way about the extensions in the off season?

The Cubs organization is enjoying its first back-to-back divisional titles in nearly a century. They have clinched their division in the fastest time since 1932. The Cubbies have the best record in the N.L. and have a team ERA at 3.81. They are near the top of most offensive categories, and that is with Soriano, Ramirez, and Lee having seasons below their individual potential. The Cubs, regardless of who takes the team, are going to want to keep Lou, Jim Hendry, Rothschild, and Perry right where they're at for a long time. It's hard to argue with their successes in the last 2 seasons, especially since they DID lose over 90 games as recently as 2006. The entire Cubs organization deserves its props for the last 2 years, and keeping their coaching staff and GM are key to their continued success in the coming years.

Jim Hendry is the GM that turned Jose Hernandez/Bobby Hill/Matt Bruback into Kenny Lofton AND Aramis Ramirez (and even got cash on top of that). He's the guy who turned a washed up Todd Hundley into Eric Karros AND Mark Grudzielaneck. He's the guy whose WORST trade was trading 3 guys with no spot on the roster for the forseeable future into Juan Pierre (who stole over 50 bases and led the league in hits)--and that's the WORST anyone can tag him with. Mr. Hendry's track record is impressive, and his ability to build a team with a proactive payroll is unquestioned (since the nightmare 2006 season). He needs to be locked up long-term, and I have a hard time seeing him not getting whatever he asks for from the new owners.

Very well said.

Lou Piniella, as far as I'm concerned, is one of the BEST things/people baseball has to offer.
Sincerely, A Red Sox Fan
