Rutgers QB throws punch at teammate

Quarterback Mike Teel will not be punished for throwing a punch at teammate Glen Lee in the waning seconds of Rutgers' loss to Navy on Saturday. Coach Greg Schiano insisted Sunday in a telephone conference call that the incident "was over and done with," and that he felt there was no need to suspend his beleaguered fifth-year starter. "In my eyes, it could be a great teaching opportunity, as what not to do when frustration sets in and bubbles over," Schiano said. Shortly after Navy kicked a go-ahead field goal, Teel threw an interception that iced the Midshipmen's 23-21 win in Annapolis. As Teel was coming off the field, Lee, a reserve defensive back, was trying to encourage him to keep his head up and come off the field. Teel apparently took exception to what Lee said and threw a punch at the sophomore.

One would have to assume that words of encouragement were not what was being said.

Even if you can say something nice...keep your mouth shut!

Don't be mad at Glen, Mike. He didn't throw the interception. You did.

I am surprised that there wasn't a full on prison like riot fight between the players of Rutgers based on how crappy they are playing. What a total meltdown. I wonder if Schiano is thinking that Joe Pa can't die soon enough

Maybe he told he told Teel you "Dude you need to stay off the field."

or maybe he said, "dude, my sister can throw better than you and she was born with NO ARMS!"

or

"Damn Teel, I could lodge the football in my butt, rip one and get the ball to the WR with better accuracy than you can with your arm!"

Teel has looked terrible so far. Schiano might want to go to the backups.

September 22, 2008  11:37 AM ET

Nice leadership shown there, Ace. Does Rutgers not have a flashy redshirt freshman or sophomore to turn to? Probably about time to pull the trigger on an ugly season!

September 22, 2008  11:54 AM ET

Lee just simply asked Teel if he knew the difference between the two teams jerseys?

September 22, 2008  12:15 PM ET

What is really shocking is he completed the punch

September 22, 2008  03:18 PM ET

Did he even connect on the punch? If so, that was his best completion this season. Maybe they should add that to the playbook.

September 22, 2008  03:55 PM ET

AppStateGrad: You took my response!! I was going to say that it was the only time he connected this year!!! Good one!!!

September 22, 2008  04:35 PM ET

Whatsabigga deal, huh? Thisa Mike Teel is terrible. I lika the joke in #11. He cannot a connect on a passa this year? Whatsa his problem?

September 22, 2008  04:43 PM ET

Was it a straight punch or an uppercut?

September 22, 2008  06:40 PM ET

If they had any better option at QB, I doubt that they would still be calling it a great teaching opportunity.

September 22, 2008  07:29 PM ET

This is a sad deal and an absolute no-win for Greg Schiano. No matter what he does he will be wrong in some one's eyes. I believe Teel should be punished/suspended for throwing a punch at a teammate during a game in front of the public and in front of TV cameras. Had this been in practice "within the family" as these people have spouted out for the last 48 hours that would be one thing. Teel has embarrassed himself, his coaches, his program, his university, and the state of New Jersey (although NJ embarrasses itself to the rest of the nation everyday that out-of-staters fly into Newark Intl.)

Another thing... as staff member at an elementary school in NJ today, I was hit the question... "I thought it was wrong to hit people because just because they something I don't like. Why wasn't he punished?"

Thanks Coach Schiano, you just made educators' lives in the NJ area a whole lot tougher.

above should read "hit with the question" in second to last graph...

It is time to start DC Jefferson and use his speed and arm strength. Britt and Underwood will be better with Jefferson as well as Tim Brown. Do not ever attempt to start Mason Robison nor Kodell Young. Jourdan Brooks got size and speed to be 1000 yard rusher.

September 22, 2008  10:00 PM ET

That'll teach him to support his team mate...

Geeze, if that is all he really said, he should get at least a 1 game suspension some time during the season.

Let's see him try that with a starter. Better yet, with a starting offensive lineman.

Complete BS.. Let it of been the other way around and Lee took a swing @ Teel... Since nobody else wants to go there, I will...
