In a stunning reversal of a summer-long drama, the Pirates and top draft pick Pedro Alvarez last night agreed to terms on a revised four-year, major league contract worth a guaranteed $6,355,000, according to three sources intimately familiar with the talks. The contract is expected to be signed once Alvarez passes a physical, which could happen early this week. It was not immediately clear which side instigated the new talks, when they began or whether they occurred with the blessing of Major League Baseball and its players' union. But one source indicated that a signed contract between the Pirates and Alvarez likely will quash a related grievance filed by the union against commissioner Bud Selig's office, offering a sign that all concerned have been duly informed of this development.

I'll believe it ONLY when the ink is dry.

Again, Pens - incredibly hot avatar.

The title "Pirates to sign number one pick" is incomplete; this should read "Pirates to sign number one pick so they can get him some public paying time and trade him by mid-July." There, that's better.

I agree, your title is much more accurate.

Calling Pedro Alvarez ...

Figure out where you wanna play next and get a jump on it , because the Real Estate market is cheap right now ... New York ? Boston ? San Francisco (only because the weather is better but maybe you like the humidity?)...Just rent in Pittsburgh and don't buy any furniture.

^^^^^^^
I'm sure he's been given that advice already.

Let's see, it's a four year contract...that means the Pirates will trade him sometime in July of 2011.

Possibly 2010 the way this team operates...however this new management team seems to have a better handle on things. Any chance they could trade the Nuttings for REAL owners?

The picture is of Jack Wilson trying to give his hat to a fan, but no one seems to want it.

A 4 year contract plus arbitration locks him up at least 6 years. If THIS management makes better scouting choices(and they can't make worse ones than Littlyield)they might have a much better team.I am guess you know Pirates have #2 ranked played in all of minors (McCutchen) and another (Tabata) who are both 5 tool players. One is 21 and the other is 20.So neither one will be traded.

I'd like to believe that, I really really would. BUT, the Nuttings are among the worst owners in sports so I'll believe it when I see it.
