Sophomore tight end Will Yeatman's Notre Dame career could be in jeopardy after he and freshman center Mike Golic Jr. were among 41 people arrested by South Bend Police on misdemeanor underage drinking charges early Sunday after the team returned from its 23-7 loss at Michigan State. Yeatman, who was also the lacrosse team's leading scorer in 2007, was arrested in January after driving drunk on a campus sidewalk. He pleaded guilty to drunken driving and reckless driving, although prosecutors agreed to dismiss the drunken-driving charge if he avoided more legal trouble for one year. Yeatman was suspended from spring football and the 2008 lacrosse season. He has two catches for six yards this season. Golic is the son of former Notre Dame defensive lineman and current ESPN radio and television personality Mike Golic. His uncle Bob Golic also was a star for the Irish, and his brother Jake is a high school senior tight end who has committed to Notre Dame. ''I was made aware of the situation late this afternoon and am currently looking into the matter,'' Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis said in a statement.

No one hates Notre Dame more than me, but that stuff happens all the time with college students. It's no big deal.

September 22, 2008  08:19 AM ET

I agree with Trojans#1.

Combine that with the fact that its a bunch of Irish Catholics in a town with absolutely nothing else to do...

September 22, 2008  08:34 AM ET

I got to stick with you too, College is where this stuff is suppose to happen, worry more once they get out if they haven't grown out of the phase

I think Will Yeatman just punched his ticket off the team. After getting a DUI in the spring, the poor kid hasn't learned anything. I guess football & lacrosse does not mean that much to him.
As for Mike Golic Jr, he's a freshman, he's going to do stupid things if the guys he's hanging around do it.

After an L they should be watching tape of the game, not going out getting Chitfaced!

uh helllo! Is there is a brain in any of your heads? First off, ND has had a problem with players getting stung with drinking problems. Seems there's a problem with the coaching staff of relaying to their players that this behavior is not acceptable. The football players DO HAVE standards to live up to or so you would think but obviously that's not the case under Charlie "the cheater" Weis. But then again, if you played for Charlie, you'd probably wanna drink too.

Btw, Jimmy Mophead Clausen turned 21 yesterday so now he can legally partake in the Beer Olympics.

I dont recall anyone from college that didin't drink underage. Except the former military guys who were 24 year old freshman, who of course were legal to drink by the time they showed up.

Yeatman is probably gone, Golic has nothing to worry about.

September 22, 2008  09:09 AM ET

You certainly would think with the Mike Golic connection, they could get Weis on the Nutrisystem...

I bet what happened is that Weis told his players that it takes 30-40 beers before your BAC starts to rise, so the players thought they were good to go for at least a couple...

I hate to see a kid screw up his future like this; a lot if underged college kids drink. But with today's media scuitny, where you make the papers for a speeding ticket (no drugs or alcohol involved) college athlete need to be extremely careful.

September 22, 2008  09:18 AM ET

underaged - sorry about the typo and the others that I may have missed

September 22, 2008  09:29 AM ET

you are on the football team..you are high profile...you just don't do what these kids do and think no harm will come to you especially when it appears that South Bend is more active in going after underage drinkers. The coaches should just have the kids at their place and let them drink and fondle each other in private.

Charlie Weis was arrested late last night for refusing to leave an Old Country Buffet. He was found removing steam trays of crab legs and punching a man at the carving station who supposedly cut him in line. His cardiologist was notified about this incident early this morning.

September 22, 2008  09:42 AM ET

What a total non-issue. Millions of undergrads drink every year. As long as they weren't hurting themselves or anyone else no one should care. You can argue all you want that they screwed up and "yeatman is gone", but the simple fact is that those who determine the consequences don't care. The police will give a small fine. The administration, student body, alumni, and most importantly coaches couldn't care less about this. The issue will be argued about and remain on message boards like this and in bombastic shouting matches on First and Ten and Around the Horn. I encourage all of you to continue trying to make an issue of this, but do now that no one in here in ND cares about this and nothing will be done about it.

That was cuel and if I was not laughing so hard, I would have responded sooner

1.) Notre Dame is a bunch of French Catholics. The Irish Catholics are just too stupid to recognize this.

2.) If Notre Dame is going to act all high and mighty about how their students would never do this, then they need to never do this. The fact is Notre Dame is an average liberal arts college with tough admissions and a below average football program.

Golic will slap his kid upside the head for this, and will probably be a one-time incident. yes, underage drinking is pretty normal, and not a big deal.

Yeatman? Well, that is NOT your average undergrad mistake. Drunk and reckless driving on a sidewalk (!!) followed by this less than a year later? Drunk driving is putting others at risk, you morons, and that means he needs to get stomped before he kills himself or (much worse) anyone else. Come the heII on, how can you idiots dimiss that? And if you, Andy Grey, don't care about drunk drivers, then maybe you can be the tool he runs over on his next bender.

Cut him from the team, expel him from the school, and encourage Southbend prosecutors to seek jail time. May ruin his career, but may save more than one life. And that is a more than fair trade.

Underage drinking happens everyday on all college campus' nationwide...No big deal !!

September 22, 2008  10:09 AM ET

I said "as long as they weren't hurting themselves or anyone else no one should care."

They weren't hurting anyone else.

Yeatman's incident was in January and was dealt with in January.

September 22, 2008  10:18 AM ET

I agree, no big deal, it happens on every campus. But just like posession of a little reefer, it is illegal. Lets not set a double standard. Under age drinking and posession of a small amount a reefer get basically the same punishment under the law. Lets just make sure that it addressed by the coaching staff and the proper punishment is invoked.

September 22, 2008  10:37 AM ET

No big Deal. This is a lesson learned. Let the first time offender off with a warning. What dad "Golic" going to say or do is worst then what coach will do to him.

September 22, 2008  10:54 AM ET

Of course, Coach Weis can't be responsible for his squad at all times, but more and more it appears that the firing of Ty Willingham was reactionary, premature and ill-advised...
