Agent: Gaborik wants Wild deal

Marian Gaborik was held off the ice Sunday as the Wild went through their second day of training camp. He was taken out of a scrimmage Saturday because of a pulled quadriceps muscle in his right leg. "Still sore," assistant general manager Tom Lynn said. "We'll be conservative this time of year. We're not going to push him out there; we'll rest him until he's really ready." Of more interest were comments from Gaborik's agent Ron Salcer, who watched practice Sunday from the stands at Ralph Engelstad Arena. He will meet with Lynn this week to discuss a contract extension for Gaborik, though Lynn declined to say when. In a short interview with the local beat writers, Salcer said Gaborik has made it clear he wants to get a deal done with Minnesota. "Marian's made it clear that's what he wants me to pursue," Salcer said. "Our intentions are sincere; there's not much more that I can say." The Wild have offered Gaborik a long-term contract that would make him one of the highest-paid players in the NHL, one that would average around $8.5 million a season.

They offered 8.5mm a year on a long term deal? So W-t-F is the hold up to sign then?

Me thinks he does not really want to sign there, but he has to make it look good.

At least the St. Paul Pioneer Press managed to find a few more words with which to pad out their story today ....

But how will this impact Mats Sundin?

Good question...since according to the T&R staff, E V E R Y signing is related to that guy.

Gabby wants more money per year than that. I think thats what the hold up is. It helps to get your agent saying the right things in the press.

B bye....

I agree with all those who say Gaborick is making it look good on his behalf. Doesn't matter what we offer him, he will not sign. why would he want to now go against his pal Demetra whenever we play those damn canucks or pass up the chance of playing in the scoring fest Eastern Conference?

8.5 per year for Gaborik? Thats Crosby,Malkin, and Ovechkin territory. He's a very good talent yeah, but he doesnt have the talent of those 3 players. The guy made 7.5 last year. Thats also Joe Thornton cash. What has he done to get Thornton type cash? He hasnt won any Art Ross's or MVP's. This guys max should be 6 or 6.5. The salaries in the NHL are again out of whack.

I concur. BGM, are you sure someone else is not using your account? LOL

trade him! for crying out loud risebrough please grow a pair and trade him! before the season the return will be highest, you can get two players and a pick out of a desperate (LA, FLA) or stupid (TOR) team. Come on. He doesn't want to play here, he's a poor playoff performer, and probably wants more than 8.5 mil...let some other team overpay for him.

September 22, 2008  11:50 PM ET

Maybe Lowe & Burke can fight to overpay him. Lets not forget Sather, he likes to pay too much.

Agent: Gaborik wants Wild deal

Yeah, but he's not too wild about their offer so he's not too wild about staying with the Wild!

September 23, 2008  11:52 PM ET

give it to him hes your best player

September 24, 2008  04:05 PM ET

The only reason he hasn't garnered Ovy or Crosby money is because he's in a small market - hence little to no exposure, hence lack of dedicated fanbase, hence no merchandizing...if he played in NYC, Montreal or Toronto, and had the exposure to die-hard hockey fans he'd have it, not that he'd deserve it per se, but my bet is he'd get it...
