Can Royals afford to keep Guillen?

With everything that has gone on with Jose Guillen this season -- the strained relationship with coaches and the manager, the comments about the fans, the shouting match with a fan, etc. -- the funny thing is, he's going to wind up with pretty decent numbers this season. Guillen is going to give the Royals just about what you'd expect for his salary level these days in the inflated world of baseball economics. But can the Royals afford such a moody player around a team trying to develop young players? "We will continue to work with him," Moore said. "It's a learning process and we will continue to work with his approach off the field."

The Royals sign Gil Meche and Jose Guillen to fairly large (by small market standards) contracts. Both have mostly earned their money. Meche this year has a 4.08 ERA, which isn't horrible, and Guillen has respectable offensive stats. And the Royals will end this season pretty much where they ended last season, in last place with 72 wins. Stop signing these boobs and develope your team.

Come on the Royals havent kept any body since George Brett . They neeed to keep Guillen to biuld around.

Guillen is a moody nut job who doesn't want to be on a last place, small market team. Trade him for some bullpen arms which might help to improve the team to, say, 75 wins.

If the Royals are serious about "big changes" for next year, they should make sure they can afford him. If they let him go, that's just going to prove that their ownership is full of hot air.

I think he'd be great on the same team as Jeff Kent.......wouldn't that be an interesting dynamic???

The Yankees should not get this guy.

Jeffrey Flanagan is the author of the article cited from the Star. Regular readers of the paper who actually understand the game of baseball put very little stock in his thoughts. Jose Guillen ranks 46th among all qualified outfielders with a .751 OPS. His OBP is a dismal .304 which ranks as 57th. His high RBI total is a reflection of opportunity and nothing more. I find it hard to accept any argument that justifies his $12 million per year salary.

Guillen is not the type of player to build a team around, he's the type you trade to get whatever you can to build around.

He's not overpaid enough to be a Yankee

The Royals have a decent core of young players. They could be the next Rays. They should keep Guillen because they need as much experience as they can get.
