Can Howard play through hecklers?

Here is the cumulative effect of what Josh Howard has accomplished for himself since the infamous radio interview on "The Michael Irvin Show" on April 25. When the Mavericks hold media day Sept. 29, it will be mandatory for Howard to answer this question: "Since it was the off-season and you have stated publicly that you smoke marijuana in the off-season, were you under the influence of marijuana when you said you don't celebrate the national anthem because you are black?" If Howard's play last year was negatively affected by sensitive issues such as the deaths of his college coach and members of his family and the trade of close friend Devin Harris, how will consistently nasty disapproval disturb him?"

Anyone who doesn't respect out national anthem, regardless of color, is obvisouly a Commie

If I had a say, he'd be playing to the taunts of Greek hecklers.

This guy needs to go away.

September 22, 2008  08:55 AM ET

Clearly the guy is dumb as a rock......
whatever you believe- just keep it to yourself and there would be no
controversy or questions......
act like a MAN, not a 14 year old
- when you say and DO stupid things- EXPECT oncequences

I wonder if Cuban will post the heckler's names on the internet ?

Howard should demand a trade but then his gf Nowitzki will be crushed!

September 22, 2008  09:54 AM ET

Howard is done in Dallas. Infact this current Dallas team itself is done!! They need to break it up and get some younger pieces for the future, the current crop is not a championship team. Will be hard pressed to even make playoffs this season

September 22, 2008  09:58 AM ET

This guy is a complete idiot. Guys like this don't deserve the privilege of playing in the NBA. Just kick him out........

September 22, 2008  10:07 AM ET

even if you do hold those feelings why would you say it or display it in that way??...why would you tell the world that you smoke weed?...why would you associate all black people with such ignorant feelings?...why not just shut up and play ball??....bball or flag football or whatever...what is his malfunction?

The difficult thing for Dallas is trying to figure out if Howard has enough HEART when he isn't stoned, to play to his potential. Any Mavs fan has seen Howard when he is playing at his potential and knows he can be a game changing player but we also know that he can disappear in a heartbeat and not show a care in the world as he does so.
People can keep bringing up Dirk as trade bait and I'm sure that ANY and ALL players are up for possible deals but there isn't likely a single trade out there that will bring the Mavs what Dirk is worth. People can call him soft all they want but he is a 7 footer who can drive to the rim and draw fouls one minute and sink 3s the next.
With Carlisle coming in I don't see Dallas blowing things up. Cuban will for the most part keep everything as is and see if his forced Kidd trade can be salvaged to show something less than a bone headed knee jerk reaction to a tough season in the best division in the NBA. I personally don't know if Harris would have made Dallas any better but we would have had at least a little youth. Just think what Dallas would have been like if they would have put all those they traded into a trade for a great center. That would have changed their team for the better FAR MORE than bringing in Kidd.. I know.. I'm off track. :P

Trade him to New York for Z-Bo.

He will get a fresh start in NYC.

Well, he's right about one thing--trading Devin Harris was a bad idea. This year will be a challenge in more ways than one.

September 22, 2008  12:15 PM ET

September 22, 2008  12:18 PM ET

Sorry, but he'll never be a winner just a whiner. The MAVS are toast! That team is a choke job waiting to happened AGAIN. MARK CUBAN - Game Over, mi amigo!

Well let's say he was stoned and let's not waste more time...

You know I'm living in Belgium and a lot of peopl(especially from the north side of the country) are not afraid to claim their disrespect to the Belgian State, they want it to be dismantled in two...

So I don't mean such comments are no big thing but maybe you Americans should take it a little bit less seriously. OK I know kids are watching and it's a bad example to them. So let's say the guy was stoned...
But even a stoned guy won't say what's not on his mind, then what I see is another reason to worry about the deep racial problem that lies in the US. Not about the future of an already multimillionnaire player who just can't keep his mouth shut...
Am I right ?
