Gasol deal gets even better for Lakers

In a now-it-can-be-told admission, Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak acknowledged that the trade late last season that brought forward-center Pau Gasol to the Lakers resulted in the Lakers giving up less than the Memphis Grizzlies originally sought. Kupchak explained the particulars of the request made by the Grizzlies in a recent Q-and-A on lakers.com. In that blockbuster deal, that essentially helped catapult the Lakers to the Western Conference title and into the NBA Finals, Gasol was acquired Feb. 1 in exchange for center Kwame Brown, veteran guard Aaron McKie, rookie guard Javaris Crittenton, two future first-round draft picks, and the rights to Gasol's younger brother, forward Marc Gasol, whom the Lakers used a second-round pick in the 2007 NBA draft to select. The Lakers had a pair of second-round picks last year. Gasol was selected 48th overall, eight picks after the Lakers drafted Sun. The younger Gasol spent the 2007-2008 season playing in Europe. In the end, the Lakers were able to hold on to Sun, primarily because of the scouting report that assistant general manager Ronnie Lester prepared for Kupchak, after Lester evaluated Sun in Singapore, a month before the trade was consummated. So, instead of wearing the black and blue colors of the Memphis Grizzlies, Sun will be in purple and gold, after signing a two-year guaranteed contract last month with the Lakers.

Considering the lakers gave up two first round draft picks...It's not that bad of a trade... Memphis is thinking futuristic...

September 22, 2008  08:51 AM ET

lost-
it IS/WAS a bad trade-
2 # 30 picks - yeah technically 1st round.....
but there are no LBJ's sitting there that high,

Pau is a solid All-star caliber player who is still well in his prime
The trade was a JOKE

September 22, 2008  09:47 AM ET

The trade was good for both teams; how long would Gasol have stayed in Memphis anyway?

September 22, 2008  09:48 AM ET

A trade is always a gamble and things change quickly in the league.. lets say the Rockets eliminate the Lakers... Kobe goes to Europe... the pick will be looking good....

September 22, 2008  09:48 AM ET

the question still remains can kobe win a title without Shaq & put the hit internet smash 2 rest: "U know how i be last week kobe couldnt do without me"

This trade was NOT a joke, but Jerry West's politics. He's loyal to lakerland, period. He pulled off something that he could potentially have done with many other teams, but no, he went to the Lakers; Kindof like a no-bid contract.
I'm not sure if the Griz owners have any brains at all, prolly not. Lekers should atleast send season tickets for the Griz brass so they can watch what they help create in the Lakerland.

Writer mentions "Sun" but never explains who Sun is or how he came about. Bad writing.

I think Memphis did pretty well in the trade as well... As a Laker fan I'm not happy with Gasol's mental toughness, he needs to work on that this year!

September 22, 2008  10:39 AM ET

It's only a steal because Pau Gasol is far better than any other player involved in the whole deal. However, I have to agree with Dinero that Pau needs to work on his mental toughness this season. He has to rebound from that poor performance against the Celtics.

September 22, 2008  10:47 AM ET

I think this year will show us exactly what the Lakers deal has given them. Personally I thought Gasol would have brought more mental toughness than he did and although he looks good I expected a little better. Maybe this will be the year for the Lakers but if not then look for Kobe to start throwing temper tantrums again. The Hornets are my early pick for this coming season. If CP3 and company had handed LA a loss in the playoffs then I'm not so sure that Boston would have won. Maybe I've become too big of a CP3 fan but I see great things for this team. My Mavs are in for a rough year and I just hope the new coach can motivate the talent to rise to the top and he uses Kidd in some type of REALISTIC fashion instead of putting him off to the side of the court to post up like a shooting guard. It's going to be a fun season regardless.

the writer needs to be fired. Who the hell is Sun from this article. How can you talk about a guy without introducing him to the audience, you didn't even hyperlink his name....

Happpy job hunting.

September 22, 2008  10:49 AM ET

well, the nba failed to act on this trade. clearly one sided and should have never gone through. any team thats as retarded as the Grizz to give up an all star for what will probably amount to nobody...should be fined and suspended from playing for a few years. woo, first round picks. yeah i'm pretty sure they'll be around 25-30 won't they? whats the point in that? thats borderline second round. for a premiere power forward? gimme a break. the grizz had way better trades in line for gasol but refused to take it because of jerry west's connections, or maybe they really are retarded, who knows. no way that trade should have went through

I don't really think that Gasol is as bad as he looked against the Cs. When you take into consideration that Odom and the rest of the Lakers front line disappeared, Gasol gave a decent account of himself. Playing one against 3 can get to be pretty difficult.

September 22, 2008  11:20 AM ET

I agree with you that Lamar Odom basically checked out against the C's. Truth be told he wasn't there for much of the playoffs and I was one of the many who were on this site advocating (and praying) for a Lakers-Kings trade for Artest (even if I knew that not in a million years would the Kings help the Lakers).

Pau still needed to step up, IMO, and he didn't.

For all the people that are mad about the Pau Gasol deal because they think Jerry West has loyalties are wrong. Was Jerry West even GM when the trade went through? And McHale only traded Garnett to the Celtics because he wanted to help them. He was getting a way better offer from the Lakers.

September 22, 2008  12:19 PM ET

I always knew Pau was a 'finesse' player. Never seen him as a guy that would bang in the post or for rebounds, so i wasn't really surprise at how he played against the Celts. He played decent considering how good the Celts defense was. As far as the trade goes, i think both sides came out good (Lakers got the better end of it since they're not in a rebuilding mode). The Griz have a good core of young players in Gay, Mayo, Gasol, Conley, etc. IF (big IF) management keeps all of them intact for a couple years, i think they have a good chance of being a decent team. As for the Lakers, one year under their belt, hopefully they stay hungry and keep it going this year.

Go Lakers!

Chris Wallace is the current GM of the Memphis Grizzlies. Not Jerry West. He retired the summer before all of this went down. This is the same Chris Wallace who brought an out of shape, on the bottle Vin Baker to the Celtics as its GM.
