"I'll retire next year, I already gave my all. I don't need to prove anything for anyone and within one year I'll put my gloves aside," announced Anderson Silva UFC Middleweight Champion telling intheguard.tv that he plans on retiring sometime next year. If this does in fact happen it would be a truly hurt the UFC and the sport as a whole. Silva has became one of the best fighters in the world and is undoubtedly the best middleweight the sport has ever seen.

Does anyone edit this stuff before it goes online? "would be a truly hurt the UFC" or "Silva has became..."

I would hate to see this happen. Love watching him fight.

"Say it ain't so Joe..." Please...

They have to pay him 'last fight before he retires money' now.

Every 4 months for the next three years.

How old is he? I guess you can look at it 2 ways. Retire on top, or retire when there is so much more left in him. He will have plenty to fall back on, but these guys all get that itch to fight again. If I where him, and i thought of retiring, I would do it with NO intentions of comming back. If he retires and comes back 3 years later and gets his **** whooped, there goes his legacy. Sort of Michael Jordan...just stay retired.

I'm pretty certain he's laying the groundwork for that "Anderson, please don't retire, the sport needs you!" contract after his current one expires. It's a good self marketing move.

September 22, 2008  11:28 AM ET

Ooooohkay, I'll believe it when I see it. Anderson has at least 5 good years but maybe he wants to avoid taking any real damage to the brain...smart man to go w/ classy.

September 22, 2008  11:53 AM ET

Damn. Hope this doesn't happen. Hopefully he's just trying to get a huge contract. Pay him, Dana.

September 22, 2008  12:09 PM ET

Well at their last even, Silva and Brandon Vera took home the same amount of cash ($200,000). There is something wrong with that. Hopefully he is just wanting more money per fight. Or maybe he just wants to retire now.

September 22, 2008  12:18 PM ET

That sucks, hopefully he changes his mind.

I'll agree that after he fights GSP he'll have very little left to prove...unless he's got a superfight planned with Fedor as well.

September 22, 2008  10:15 PM ET

Well if you does actually retire, only then will mere mortals again be able to wear the middleweight belt (and light heavyweight as well perhaps?).

He'd win both of those fights.

Who ever said he was going to fight GSP?
I thought he wanted the challenge of moving up in weight to fight, not down.

There is no confirmation that he actually will fight GSP, just a ton of rumors and lots of hope. I don't think that Silva would move down. They'd either fight catch-weight, or GSP would move up. I honestly doubt that Silva could move down to 170 and have anything behind his punches anyway.

I agree. But that wouldn't make them any less fun to watch!

I don't know. GSP would certainly be a handful. A great fight to say the least.
