Spurs add former Hawk Salim Stoudamire

Salim Stoudamire has escaped pro basketball's burial grounds -- the Atlanta Hawks -- and now will play for a winner. The ex-Wildcat shooting star has signed with the San Antonio Spurs and is expected to replace the three-point shooting threat of Brent Barry and perhaps Robert Horry. In three years with the dismal Hawks, Stoudamire averaged just 17 minutes per game and was often slowed by a chronic ankle injury. His career average is eight points per game.

Chronic ankle injury??? Nice pick up Spurs.

Actually its a lateral move it wont hurt them much given the fact that he is replacing Brent BC Barry But it sure as heII wont help the Spurs.

Yuck-
Barry at least can get his shot off- he was a tal guard. And Horry was 6'10
SS is a tiny guy- why do you think he only played limited minutes for the Hawks.
-can't run the NBA point (pr defend) and is too small to pay 2 guard
this is a bad signing if their hope is to replace those 2

September 22, 2008  11:31 PM ET

who would anybody want 2 play for the flopping spurs!

Salim is not a starter in the NBA, but he might be able to excel as a spark plug scorer off the bench. If Ginobili starts this year (as he should), then the Spurs will need youthful subs that can score and Salim can bring that (8 points in every 17 minutes). Unfortunately though, he doesn't bring much else.

The Hawks gave the eventual champs more playoff trouble than LA and Det. No burial ground anymore Ari paper.

The guy plays no defense, he's a short shooting guard, and he can't handle the ball well enough to play point; other than that he's solid........

If Pop signed him he must see something in him. Playing for a winner does wonders for a player. With the Spurs, it's the system. As long as he plays his role and keeps his mouth shut he will do fine. As for him not playing defense that was the same knock on Finley. While he will not win defensive player of the year honors he has become a decient defender. The short shooting guard will help when other teams play small ball.

Spurs problem is athleticism not shooting. The spurs were exposed to the Lakers athleticism and was crushed by Kobe and Lamar Odom. The Spurs are diminishing as a powerhouse in the West. They still haven't got younger, Manu is hurt, and Tim Duncan has to play heavy minutes. The Lakers are still the favorites to win the West. Not to mention, they have rejects as centers like Olberto which was a joke against the Lakers.

I'm not understanding the part about Tim having to "play heavy minutes." He averaged 34 minutes a game last year. That's a little less than 3/4 of the game. Pop has always been a big advocate of resting guys as much as possible as they get older, and as the season wears on. So this is not a big deal....yet. Tim had a great year last year, played w/a bounce in his step, and was still the same Tim Duncan of years before, sans pain.

word!

September 23, 2008  06:24 PM ET

The reason of saying Tim has to play heavy minutes because Ginoboli is going to be out and when he does come back he would not be 100 percent. So that means Duncan has to play more than the 34 minutes he is accustomed too. That is doom for San Antonio down the stretch of the season. Spurs is going to slip down to atleast to the sixth seed this year. The team is too old and Popvich is going to play heavy minutes for these old guys if they are going to compete because their best players are 30 or older including Duncan, Bowen, Thomas, Manu, and Finley. Tony Parker is the only core player that is young but he being heavy minutes since coming to San Antonio.

jgb, have you watched the spurs play? they throw it in the middle to tim and then let him score or pass it out and rotate the ball to open shooters, theyre probably the best in the league at doing this. Salim will either be open or draw attention because man this guy can SHOOT! and he is a very underrated defender. have you ever watched basketball? and when salim was a rookie he was getting minutes and putting up solid numbers, he will be a fine pick up for this team

My beloved spurs do need to get younger. Although salim is unexperienced, he will fit into thier system. GOSUNS put it best as saying that he will be wide open since Timmy (as well as Tony and Manu) all draw double teams at times. This leaves perimeter shooters wide open. Barry wasn't healthy enough to play many minutes the last couple of years. Especially not for the 4.5 million a year we paid him. He did play in the Lakers series but only had one good game. (the one where Fisher fouled him but got no call) although that was his fault for not selling it. I was hoping that we would get Pargo from New Orleans before he signed over-seas but I am anxious to see Salim in action because there is no doubt he will get open shots all the time. Look at Bowen, he lives off of that uncontested 3 pointer in the corner.

Spurs had a good run but their time has passed them. They are too old and it was exposed to the up and coming dynasty of the Lakers.
