Yanks want Cashman to make big changes

"Changes ... they are a 'comin','' said one person who speaks regularly with Yankees' decision makers. Those alterations will not involve the manager and probably not the general manager, either (while absent Hank Steinbrenner takes an occasional shot at Brian Cashman, sources say they will attempt to bring Cashman back and most believe there's a decent chance he'll eventually accept). The changes will involve a roster that proved to be long on age but short on way too much (from viable starting pitchers to above average defenders to solid backups).

I think Cash needs to go- just as Torre needed to go-
No hard feeelings Cash helped win us 4 rings.....

he has been abysmal with getting us pitching-
he has picked up garbage after garbage.

Cashman is not the prolem. Its Hank Steinbrenner. He gets rid of the best coach they have ever had in my 44 year lifetime. Joe is about to deliver the Dodgers only ther 3rd division title in 20 years in spite of ever player on his team being on the DL at some point. Joe Girardi is watching the playoffs from the stands!

But he'll be back. Idiots!

Agree with jgb. Cashman isn't the problem but he does need to go. Sometimes you just need to move on and you need to have change.

--- Cash didnt do anything, the only smart move he's made was trading David Wells for Roger Clemens.. his predecessors are the ones who scouted guys like Jeter, Bernie Williams.. and signed key free agents like Paul o Neill and Tino Martinez.. so yes you can say that he helped win 4 rings, but those were with guys he didnt sign or scout. Everyone is giving this guy too much credit for the success of the Yankees.

I am not torre bashing...
but he did inherit a fantastic team with CLUTCH hitting & great stable veteran pitching

He was an awful manager before the Yanks - did he learn how to manage? or did he get the team at the right time? Also - don't forget the Yanks (although they did make the playoffs) haven't made it past the 1st round in 4 years -under his watch
And probably worst of all- he was the head of the ship to the WORST collapse in baseball history- losing a 3-0 lead to the sox.

There really is not that much of a problem, and Cash was saddled with big long contracts that proved less productive towards their ends. Cash makes some fine moves.

The Yankees have been in the playoss for 13 years straight, numerous WS and a dybasty. I am not attributing all of that to Cash, but you lose credibility when you evagerate so obviously...

Agreed; Cash was neither their savior, nor should he be their goat for that matter. Torre did inherit a good team but I've seen other head coaches "F" things up..........

What are you talking about ?
EVERY BG CONTRACT that is currently on the books is CASH's doing

And I wish it weren't....
we tried to curtail spending & not go for santana this year to
give the young pitchers a chance and unfortuately.....they bombed

Believe me- I wish we could bring up another nucleus like
jeter, posada, Mo, pettite
but they don't grow on trees on our farm.....

Missing the playoffs once in 14 years is not working out? You must be very disappointed in life in general.

I would say the farm is doing very well. I believe the yankees triple A won the their league title this year. There is obviously good players there. Don't under estimate them. But as far as changes, yes expect that to happen. It may not be CC, but there are others. Looks like the yankees will have some money to spend. As long term contracts are coming to an end. They will probably look for a first baseman, a starting pitcher and a center fielder. Like that's a real big secret I'm telling you all now. Somethings are just obvious.

Making the playoffs 13 out of the last 14 years, I think it's been working just fine. An end of an ERA? You ain't seen nothing yet.

September 23, 2008  02:11 PM ET

Far too late. Ever since Cashman brought in selfish players like Sheffield, Mussina, A-Rod.. this team stopped winning rings. The Yankees used to stand for "team" and now they are anything but a team.

Get rid of Giambi, Matsui, Damon, Abreu. Replace with unselfish players willing to do the little things that win rings.

I have no use for A-Rod, and hated it when management welcomed his sorry but back after NO ONE showed interest in his ridiculous contract. That deal is all about the benjamins, as Hank Steinbrenner is banking on the all-time HR champ being in pinstripes - in other words, choosing individual stats over championships - EXACTLY the attitude change that has changed the Yanks from champs to chumps. Guys like Jeter, Posada, Pettitte, Mariano are being replaced by guys chsing dollars and caring only about personal stats.

Where are O'Neill, Brosius, Tino and Knobby when you need them????!!!

September 23, 2008  02:42 PM ET

If the Wipons were smart( and they are not) they would offer Cashman a position as the Mets G.M. He would add class & creditablity to the organization. This is from disappointed Mets Fan.

For the record 3 times Mussina signed for less money than he would have received elsewhere, once with the Orioles (the union was angry at him for signing for less money) and twice with the Yankees, in 01 and 07. And since we give all the credit to Mo and the boys for 1996 thru 2000, how is it the other's fault that Rivera blew game 7 in 01 and he and Gordon blew games 4, 5, and 6 in 04 before Brown's implosion in game 7? The bullpen doesn't blow both of those series and all of a sudden Mussina, A-Rod, and Giambi are winners? Give me a break.
