New clock rules upset Urban Meyer

Florida Coach Urban Meyer is upset at the new clock-rule changes. After being limited to what he calls 46 competitive plays Saturday against Tennessee, Meyer came out firing Monday about the new 40/25-second and out-of-bounds clock rules that have reduced the number of offensive plays. He called them "awful." Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley confirmed to the Orlando Sentinel on Monday that he contacted SEC Commissioner Mike Slive about his concern for the rules. Foley said he asked that an evaluation of the rules be put on the agenda for the next formal SEC meeting in December, admitting there's probably nothing that can be done about it this year.

I have mixed feelings on this. The main reason they added these changes is to shorten TV broadcast games; to make up for all the time spent in commercials. The new rules will reward teams that can quickly call plays and are organized.

Not sure why Myers is so upset. It reduces the total time, so it would affect both teams. Less plays also means less chances for a player injury.

The games have seemed to go really fast this season...and I love college football so less of it kind of sucks. God forbid they have less commercials and more football...

Meyer is probably upset because they don't get as many snaps on offense which would hurt teams like Florida.

,or to run up the score on lil rinky dink teams.

I saw a guy get tacked out of bounds and the clock kepts on churning and Florida got two delay of game penalties following plays where their player was tackled out of bounds. The main problem is the clock should not automatically keep running and should be set after out of bounds plays. On one of the playes Tebow was knocked out of bounds into a camera person. He then helped the camera person up before getting back to the huddle.... delay of game :(

At least its the same for both teams. What I dont like is having to wait for a fat ref to run the ball up to set the play. Saw a game on Sat where the offense was ready to spike the ball to stop the clock and they lost 3 seconds because the ref was to slow

It definitly wasnt Hoculies, hey momma, sew my sleeves up.

September 23, 2008  12:34 PM ET

If it upsets Urban, I'm all for it!

September 23, 2008  01:11 PM ET

What's with this guy? It seems like Meyer is always mad about something. He keeps it up he's going to blow a cork or something. Cheer up Urban, things could be worse...you could have accepted the Notre Dame gig!

As a fan, I'm in full agreement with Meyer. It's rediculous playing a football game like it's a NASCAR race!! On one tv game this weekend, the player ran out of bounds and both the play clock and game clock kept running. There's no rhyme or reason (or, uniformity) to how the play clock is monitored from one officiating crew to the next. And when the price of PPV or in-person tickets is so ungodly expensive, let's enjoy the full extent and time of the game- instead of turning it into a snipett barely long enough to be worthy of You Tube.

As a fan, I completely agree with Meyer. Why is the NCAA turning college football into a NASCAR race?? I'm not sure why the Networks or ad agencies are standing by and letting these new game clock changes diminish the quality of the sport. I watched one tv game this weekend, and the player ran out of bounds but both the play and game clocks continued to run. There's no uniformity, either, in the way one officiating crew handles the clock as opposed to another. At a time where pay-per-view and ticket prices are through the roof, give the fans what they're paying for... T-I-M-E... !!!

The games were not slow before, and the commercials still make the games slow now, even w/ the rule change. It's about money which = commercials.
Get a 1st, go to commercial (gtc) punt gtc, 3rd down gtc, punt gtc then go long for a 1/4 change.

Because Meyer is Filth! I'm with MrMiyagiJr, If it upsets Meyer keep it up!

I really don't notice THAT big of a difference in the time for games. It sure beats waiting three hours to see the end of a game, less sitting around, more playing football.

September 23, 2008  02:31 PM ET

I don't like it, it just cuts too much of the gam out and makes it virtually impossible to pull of those dramatic come from behinds like they used to.

But we can't cut into commercial time, the fat cats gotta fill their pockets. SO let's cut actual playing time.

This new clock system takes out on ave. 10 to 15 plays a game, that's about half a quarter or a game. Not good for any one.

Meyers teams are always the ones running the clock out winning by 30 not trying to catch up, so anyone who thinks Meyer is doing this for his benefit doesn't understand football.

To Riveraeg, on your : tell me one thing that dosen't bother Urban Meyer...
I'd have to say Ohio State is one thing that doesnt bother Meyer... or anyone else in the BCS.

September 23, 2008  03:11 PM ET

I'm with MrMiyagi on this. If it upsets Urban, then I say it's a good thing.

September 23, 2008  03:41 PM ET

WAAAHHHH...only coach I know who's whining with a 4 and 0 record in the SEC. Good lord...this guy is getting worse than Spurrier which is saying something.

I agree with River1075...he's always pissed off at something. Like when the Dogs held a team dance in the end zone last year...he still **** about that. BUT let his team do something questionable, like kick a field goal when you're already up by two scores and it's totally legit.

What a big baby...Let's keep the big baby angry!!!! Calling on all of the college football fans who hate Florida!!!! Keep him crying!!

I'm sure Michigan does though, sucks to be such a dropoff from the NC to losing a bowl huh?
