Sources: Suspended Penn State players practice
Just in time for the Big Ten Conference opener, two suspended Penn State defensive linemen, Maurice Evans and Abe Koroma, were back at practice yesterday, according to two sources close to the team. Evans and Koroma were suspended by coach Joe Paterno just before the Oregon State game Sept. 6, and have missed two other nonconference games since then. On Sept. 2, the university police said they found less than two grams of marijuana at the campus residence of the players, both starters. After a two-week investigation, they were charged Wednesday with possession of a small amount of marijuana, a misdemeanor. According to the sources, the players' return to practice did not necessarily mean they would play Saturday when the 12th-ranked Nittany Lions host Illinois, ranked 22nd.

2 grams is a pretty small amount. I think they have done more than most teams would have by holding them out (3 games).

It would be great to have them back but we've done just fine without them. I doubt Joe will let them play until after their court dates.

Starters back right on time. The hypocrisy of the recent Paterno era continues. After years of scolding other programs for their "outlaw" ways, Paterno & nittany nation have seen their own boys become so out of control, ESPN saw fit to highlight the transgressions in a national spotlight.
As usual at PSU, the backup punters and long snappers get booted from the team while the starters are "punished" through summertime suspensions & sitdowns for the pre-conference cupcakes.
That swan song plays to the tune of, " this is nothing but a witch hunt, we're no different than anybody else".
Funny that the tune Joe & fans always sang was that PSU was different from everybody else. They did things the right way in Happy Valley. Keep singin' Joe.

These players have payed their time for getting charged with little more than a traffic ticket. Joe is in control and still ruling with an iron fist no matter what anyone says. Pete Carrol has one of his starting corners charged with a felony a few days before the OSU vs. USC game and still plays him, and everyone is saying Joe has lost control and PSU is out of control. Does anyone else see this as unfair?

So, doing drugs is okay with JoePA huh? Iron fist? Guess you missed that expose on ESPN, sure sounded like a program out of control, what was it, 156 arrests? Yeh, some iron fist!

While I do not think the charges are acceptable in any way.....all this article states is that the players in question have returned to practice.
WE'RE TALKING ABOUT PRACTICE....PRACTICE!!!!!
Ha.
Anyway, JoePa has always ran a tight ship. Never were the players charged with doing drugs. There is a huge difference with DOING drugs and HAVING drugs. Making the connection, while easy to do, is not legal nor is it justifible. Especially in court.

Furthermore, wouldn't it detramental to the team to insert a player that hasn't been a part of the team for over 3 weeks? Let alone the fact that they haven't played, but not even practiced.
Don't for one minute think they'll be in the starting line-up "just like that". No way.
The future stock in these young men were severely hampered by this suspension. If any one of them had a chance at a pro career that pretty much went out the window. JoePa doesn't make NFL players, he makes great COLLEGE players.

Congratulations! This is easily the dumbest post I have ever read. I hope your kid uses that same logic if you ever catch him/her with drugs! Have the players been drug tested? We don't know, but if you have it, then you probably intend to use it.

yup 84, now the REAL season begins. Gonna get juicy before it plays out. If their grades are passing then this is just a minor issue. Paterno was far more tougher on the team last year by making them clean up after the games...missing 3 games is enough for these two. Get them back on ther field...unless you're in DAD GUMMITTVILLE. Keep going Joepa 376...

Last Call, I wonder how much Pitt would be willing to pay for a coach like Joe Paterno?
Lighten up, Pitt won't have to play Bowling Green again this season.

So what you're saying is that posession translates to use? I'm sorry, but while I do agree that an easy connection CAN be made, that is the extent of your argument. So what other connections can be made? Be very careful of public opinion verses an actual conviction.
So the young men are back at practice. CONNECTION --> guess that means they are automatically playing.
Ther was 2 grams of pot in the apartment. CONNECTION --> all residents are pot heads.
Yup, that's fair.

I think it's pretty damn fair of JoePa to punish the players for being associated with drugs. However, I also think it's pretty damn fair not to rush to judgement. Point made.
Moving on.

There are a very limited number of reasons one would HAVE drugs. 1). Use them...2) Sell them...3) Hold them for someone else. That would make these guys !). Druggies...2). Dealers...3) Complete idiots...

If Joe had no intention of them playing, would they still be practicing?

Read any sports section, Rutger QB hits a teammate and NO action is taken. Two Nortre Dame player just arrrested. A Wisconsin player got a DUI on a friggin moped and the coach "dealt with it", no suspension. The Florida State scandal that didn't seem to touch Bobby Bowden (who has been dismissing backups and keeping starters who commited crimes for years). The USC player arrested. It is all over the NCAA. PSU has dealt with it with and seems to be much harder on the players. The whole team was punished last year for the actions of a few. I don't see any other coach doing that. I think JoePa refuses to belive that these kids can't be helped, look at how many chances he gave Austin Scott.

I would go ahead and chalk up #3 as the most likely reason. I'm not sure of the legal ability of the NCAA or governing schools to demand a drug test....however, as stated, from the facts that are KNOWN (drugs in the apartment), and nothing else to base upon, I'd have to say that the punishment has fit the crime. If more FACTS surface, then so be it. I'm positive punishment is being withheld just in case that happens.
Giving a young man a 3-game suspension for "having drugs" (2 grams) is pretty stiff. I'd say that the complete idiot role played a part in the lecture JoePa gave these young men.
