Stewart's deal upsets some at WVU
Some Board of Governor members and donors are surprised and angry to find that the six-year contract recently awarded to new West Virginia football coach Bill Stewart included not only an extra year over the original terms, but also a previously off-the-table buyout clause, sources said. The deal could entail more money than was included in Rich Rodriguez's infamously litigated deal. If Stewart were to be fired before Jan. 3, 2009, the university would have to pay him $4.125 million. The Mountaineers, ranked No. 8 before the season began, have started 1-2, without a victory against a major college opponent, and dropped out of the Top 25 for the first time since October 2005. "People are livid," said one person in a position of responsibility with the university, though requesting anonymity. "It's malfeasance, whoever did it. 'Cause it didn't have to be done. The coach didn't want it. And that wasn't Mike Garrison, he was gone."

The buyout won't matter if they keep him for more than 1 season. Its pretty bad when you go from loving the guy after the bowl game to considering firing after opening 1-2.

WVU fans should be a bit more patient. Expectations were obviously a bit too high and the season is still young, they have a shot at turning it around and having a good season.

The WVU fans seem oddly quiet this morning... seeing how big of a plague RRod was, and how happy they all said they were to see him go, its surprising they aren't rallying their support for the new guy, who they said would be better than RRod....

I don't blame WV fans for being upset about extending Stewart although they were happy enough when he was hired. Stewart did not move to a new team and new offense, but stepped into a program that was successful within the limits of its scheduling. Colorado is not that good of a team, nor ECU. WV should have won.

WVU seriously screwed up by making stewart thier coach. they had a loaded team this year and they could have competed for the NC, and unstead of spending thier time, effort, and engery looking for an new coach, they tried to ruin thier old one. the goal in college football is to win NC's not petty squabbles.

They aren't going to fire him before the buyout. Look, it's a slow start, but damn it's only been three games. Patience for the man, please?

It's obvious that WV went from one extreme (totally losing it after RR left) to another (offering an absolutely insane deal to an uproven coach). WVU is like Wily E Coyote falling off a cliff. The amount of abuse taken by them gets worse and worse the farther they fall down the cliff. It's like they are playing russian roulette with a loaded gun they loaded!

I wouldn't have awarded him a loaded contract but it's too early to judge. People shouldn't be so short sighted.
Michigan doesn't have anything to gloat about either yet.
This is the same team that lost to Pitt unexpectedly with RR at the helm so this isn't all Stewarts fault. They're a good but beatable team.

The Problem is not the coach... they just dont have the athletes to be a power house... so they have to just take what they are good at which is run the ball with pat white and hope to out score every team they play... but lucky for them their confrence isn't that good either so they still have a chance to turn things around... but u can't do much without a good D

I wonder if we are seeing the same UWV incompetence with Stewart that led to the pushing out of RichRod. UWV may be "family," but they haven't a clue about how to treat family members.

I think regardless of WVU's record thus far, the contract they gave Steward was just stupid. Should WVU fans be patient now? Well. . .no more patient than their administration should've been when selecting and placing Steward under contract as their coach for the next 6 years after an emotional victory over Oklahoma. Steward has never, ever been a successful head coach but that doesn't mean I'm critical of him being hired, I am however very critical of the money/time/buyout clause they gave him. He earned a shot when he beat Oklahoma, but based on his hostoric record as a HC and the fact that WVU so desperately wants to get their program over the hump. . .he needed a shorter leash. Instead, they sold him the farm. The WVU Athletic Department is putting the bush in bush league.

worst decision ever, this man will be the downfall of the mountaineers for a longtime to come. he does nothign on the sideline. hmmm i just love running it up the middle and not calling time outs at the end of a game when you should be trying to get into field goal range.

Although WV continues to show administration buffoonery, we'd still never want Rodriquez back.
He doesn't represent the good people of WV. Rodriquez' character...well...he has none.
The season will improve for WV. Somewhere between Marshall (Sept. 27) and South Florida (Dec. 6), someone will get an a---whoopin'.

WV fans aren't calling for Stew to be fired yet, but they are rightly upset with the clock mismanagement and sideline confusion demonstrated in the waning moments of regulation. As tough these last two losses have been, the team still looks much better than RichRod's first year, in which he only managed to win 3 games, and he inherited much more talent that Stew has now. To all Michigan fans who can't understand why WV loathes Rich Rod, I'll check back in a few years and accept your apologies. There are only two things that will happen under RichRod at Michigan.......he will either destroy the program or be very successful and screw Michigan out of millions when he leaves abruptly for yet another team. Rod is part of the terrible trio (along with Saban and Petrino) that represent what is so wrong with sports today: it is all about winning and money when it should be about team work, learning, loyalty, and values.

If, by loaded, you mean a team that lost 80% of its starting defense, 90% of its coaching staff, a multi-year 1,000 yard rusher and their top receiver, then I guess they would be considered "loaded." But if that's the bar, then how would you describe someone like OSU, who has 15+ returning starters and a coaching staff in tact?
