Knicks close to Marbury buyout

The Knicks are planning to waive and then buy out Stephon Marbury in the next few days, according to people with knowledge of the situation. Several persons with knowledge of the situation have indicated that the Knicks are planning to part ways with Marbury by the end of the week. One caveat is the approval of Madison Square Garden chairman James Dolan, who must sign off on yet another multimillion-dollar payoff for his NBA team. Marbury is in the final year of his contract, which is to pay him $21.9 million. The Knicks will likely place Marbury on waivers and, once he clears, begin negotiating a buyout. Marbury will then be free to sign with another team; the Miami Heat have a desperate need at point guard.

Pat Riley and Chris Mullen - here's your chance to get a veteran point guard. Act soon!
Maybe a change of scene is just what Marbury needs to revive his career.
After all, Baron Davis resurrected his career in Golden State under Don Nelson, and Jason Williams did so - to some extent - in Miami under Riley. If Marbury can follow in their footsteps, it would be good for him.

would possibly solve alot of issues for miami.
Would give them a big guard to play alongside wade, who can score a bundle of points at any time!
Hopefully his experience in the last couple of years in NY and then being waived will humble him a little and playing as number 2/3 or 4 choice in miami would bring out the best in him!
on the otherside will marbury be happy sitting in wades shadow?

its worth the risk for the heat as they would be able to sign him on a vets minimum salary!
But i imagine there will be a few teams that would be willing to take that chance! (Lakers, Phoenix? cleveland)

Eitherway i think marbury will find himself with a winning team that can complete for a championship or at worst late playoff contention!

New york get some salary relief and allow crawford and co to blossom!

This doesn't make any real sense for the Knicks. Why give away Marbury for nothing? Instead, send him home, tell him not to come near the team and instead keep himself in great shape and be ready for a mid-season trade. Come Februrary the Knicks might be able to package Marbury along with some other players for some actual assets. I agree with not having Marbury infect the Knicks for yet another season, but I don't understand paying through the nose in order to accomodate Marbury and the Heat.

That would be dumb dumb dumb....Play him or sit him. He may actually try to impress someone to give him that last big contract in his final year of this one....Heck, have him go through the place signing autograpghs or handing out programs. He can be the half time show. But to give him away is dumb..

Miami or any other team for that matter would be ill-advised to pick up this bloody loon. As his dubious record shows, he will not help you win anything and has the potetial to seriously blow team chemistry. Why would you want him anyway near a potential young stud like Beasley? Mentor?

Miami is rebuilding and is just a piece or two away from being back in serious contention. This guy is not the answer at PG. He's a shoot first anyway.

As a long time Knicks fan I can say that Marbury will not help out the Heat. But, if the heat want ZBo as well, they can have him.

Jay you are crazy-

marbury is a cancer-
there is no 'reviving ' something that has been dead for 10 years.

As far as baron davis....who said his career was dead pre-GS. ?
and Jay Williams ? revive ? he had a decent year...thats it.

JL... I dont think any of those guys are looking for a Vet point if its Marbury... Especially Miami, they have their superstar, their new number 1 draft pick ( should of went 1st, but they lucked out) Marion, and you think there is room for this fool? He wont pass, he is a shoot first me guy, not at all what Pat wants running his show. Plus a Riley PG is a defensive stopper, always has been, and lets face it this guy just doesn't have the heart to bother

September 23, 2008  09:04 AM ET

More importantly why is this stillllllllll going on? This was a Rumor 2 years ago......

September 23, 2008  09:12 AM ET

Stephon Marbury was fine until Isian Thomas hired Larry Brown. Once he and Brown didn't get along, all of Brown's butt-kissing friends in the media began to attack Marbury as some sort of cancer. The stupid fans in New York, who cannot think for themselves, latched on to this garbage and turnmed on Marbury, forgetting that he led the Knicks to the playoffs his first season in NY while averaging 22 and 9 (points and assists). This same media doesn't want to be proven wrong, so now they want to make sure that Marbury is banished from NY before he has a chance to prove them wrong while playing for a coach (D'Antoni) who knows how to exploit a player's strengths. Stephon Marbury remains the best player on the Knicks, and they will regret releasing him, especially if he winds up in Boston or LA.

September 23, 2008  09:29 AM ET

Are serious? Waive Maurbury why so we can be in the same predicament, no playoffs. He can score with the best, I admit he is not a point guard but he can definitely play still. Marbury still has real Knick fans stamp of approval. Knicks need to focus on freeing Zack Randolph's conttract and getting another F/C that can get up and down the court and rebound and block shots. I hope the Knicks don't really believe 2010 they will get one of the elite. You have two already Crawford and Marbury use them. Marbury wants to stay and there is no Isaih, what is the issue now let him play.

September 23, 2008  09:32 AM ET

As a heat fan i think marbury can still deliver i mean his 07-08 season stats were:
14 ppg, 1 steal, 5 assists, 2.5 rbs & 37% from downtown he has scored 20 ppg for his career Starbury is not done yet! im sure Wade wont let him runin this chance for my team 2 be a championship contender!

September 23, 2008  09:45 AM ET

If this goes down (being bought out by the Knicks), Marbury will have been given up on by his 4th NBA team (Wolves, Nets, Suns then Knicks). Talent was there no doubt, but he never seemed to be able to translate this into team success. Unfortunately for him, that has been his been his mark in the NBA.

September 23, 2008  09:51 AM ET

You guys are insane if you think Starbury is done! He has barely played over the last couple years, so he should be fresh. I'm not gonna argue that he's a selfish, shoot first, kind of player, or that he's never taken his team far, but the guy can still play. Miami would love to take a shot at him. This is Pat Riley, this is what he does. Kind of reminds me of another PG who was supposed to be a 'has been' until he went to Miami...ever heard of Tim Hardaway?

September 23, 2008  09:58 AM ET

Careful what you wish for Dee. I love Wade's game. If he plays with the fire he showed in the Beijing Olympics, watch out NBA. Adding Marbury would be a serious question mark though. Stats arent always the basis. Stephon's a career 20 point scorer but has been injury plagued, often not focused and has built that reputation of being a chemistry concern.

September 23, 2008  09:59 AM ET

I am so sick and tired of this story. All I hear is that the Knicks are going to cut Marbury. Well you know what, DO IT ALREADY!!

Enough talk, how about some damn action!

September 23, 2008  10:12 AM ET

I AM SO HAPPY... WHY DID WE WAIT FOR SO LONG... HE IS NOT DISCIPLINED ENOUGH TO BE A CONSISTENT WINNER... Obviously Mike D'Antoni did not want to add his name to the list of NBA careers Marbury has ruined... He jetssioned him from Phoenix... and also from New York...hahah... good times ahead NY..I'm buying tickets...

September 23, 2008  10:20 AM ET

Not sure why this is taking so long - if I were the Knicks organization I would just pay whatever it takes on day 1 to start moving forward.

September 23, 2008  10:20 AM ET

Marbury=Cancer. Cut him off any way you can. Slice him and don't look back.

Dude; what are you smoking? Anybody interested in Marbury could have had him long ago. He's a cancer. Any team that picks him up will immediately go south. The best place for him is Europe. The last thing a young Heat team needs is a shoot 1st guard that doesn't know the meaning of the words "team concept."
