Red Wings' backup goalies battle

When Jimmy Howard and Ty Conklin got to chatting, they soon discovered they live just 90 minutes from each other during the off-season. Besides being summertime Mainers, the two have something else in common: Both are after the same job. Howard helped make his case Monday night at Centre Ice Arena when he stopped all nine shots he faced as he took the first-half work load of the scrimmage between Team Delvecchio and Team Abel. Scrimmages, of course, only count for so much, and as much as roles with the Wings are doled out by Mike Babcock on an earned basis, Howard's path to Detroit is made harder because he can be sent to Grand Rapids without waivers. As general manager Ken Holland put it, "Jimmy Howard will lose any tie."

Irish Ty Conklin would not have signed with this team if he wasn't going to be the backup.

"Howard helped make his case Monday night at Centre Ice Arena when he stopped all nine shots he faced" Wow! He stopped all 9 shots in a scrimmage? Why isn't he starting?

Talk about the ideal job if you can land it. With that team in front of you, even the most mediocre of goalies will surely rack up some impressive looking numbers in the GAA and Wins columns in the 20-25 games you appear in.

The title of this T&R should be, "Goalie that will most likely go back to AHL stops 9 shots in scrimmage." Seriously Conkz burned the ice up last season, if he gets hot again he may challenge Osgood for a bit.

Conklin was a real solid back-up last season, and he'll do well in Detroit. I think Howard will gets some starts this season, though, to see where he's at. He's proven himself in Grand Rapids, and is obviously the goalie of the future for the Wings.

Jimmy Howard has waited a while. He has looked solid w/ the Griffens for sometime. He is a great player but I think Conklin will take the spot for now. It's a good situation for the Wings to have. Some solid depth from top to bottom.

September 23, 2008  09:05 AM ET

Conklin gets it because to be sent down he has to clear waivers. And at his low salary not a chance.

September 23, 2008  10:17 AM ET

Conklin is clearly going to be the back-up this season. Jimmy Howard will play in the AHL one more season. Come to think of it,he'll probably get traded to Toronto after Cugo gets injured after his 1st game.

Yep! He look real good ridding the pine all year long! That's where he does his best backup work! On the bench, where he belongs!

hey Robert,
Perhaps you can clear something up for me. I've always been puzzled when guys put pictures of sexy bikini babes on their profile. Do they want other guys to get turned on while they're reading their comments? Or do they wish they were women? Whazzup?

Thats gonna leave a mark..

Nothing wronh with a goalie competition for a spot. Ever. Makes the whole team better!

I can only assume you are asking me this in depth, provocative question. I have had several avatars in my time here and not all have been "sexy bikini babes" as you put it. If you look closely, the hottie in my avatar is wearing Steelers panties, so I am merely representing my favorite NFL team. Why, are you getting turned on reading other guy's comments? Or are you simply covering for your own homosexuality by pretending to be homophobic?

Translation: I'm a half-witted n00b that can't figure out the simple process of uploading an avatar on this site, so to cover my tracks I will try to attack everyone else while waving my pathetic generic FanNation flag avatar.

Howard's got 12 more years of seasoning in the minors before he's eligible to play in Detroit!

Wow, you've been on this site since July of last year and that is what you chose as your 4th--count em--4th comment? I guess it takes someone of your superior intellect that long to think up a gem like that. I'll stay tuned for your next headliner in 3 to 4 months.

DC,
I know Ty did not do all that well in his years in Edmonton, however he was a huge reason the Pens made the Playoffs last season. In 33 games covering for the injured Marc Andre Fleury, he was 18-8-5 with a 2.51 GAA and 2 shutouts. Personally, I'd rather have him as the Pens #2 than Sabourin.

This is the year the Stars leave the Wings in the dust, so who cares whether Conklin or Howard mops up after Osbad's meltdowns?

I figure Ozzie will be fighting Conklyn off this season...
