The Mets appear close to announcing that general manager Omar Minaya will be signed to a four-year contract extension. The deal should be finalized after the season, a person with knowledge of the discussions told The Star-Ledger. The person requested anonymity because the team has not formally announced anything. There is no timetable when the Mets will make their decision public, or what the contract figures entail. Minaya was already under contract through the 2009 season.

Are the Wipons kidding me!!! This man has proven that he can get paid well and do very little to improve the Mets. I dont know how they can give him a 4 year deal w/o him proving himself. If they want to give him a contract it should be on a bonus schedule. I really think Omar has pictures of the the Wilpons doing something they should not be doing. Is Omar the best that the Wilpons can do?? This is very disturbing......

hAHa MINaya is the Man....Yeah extend him ... 2-3 yrs , He has turned the Mets around ... and there's no doubt about it.!!!

I think hes done well, he has pulled in a quite a few good players and undoubtingly improved the Mets, But they have only made one play off appearance with him. He had another year left in his contract I am not sure now is the time to give him another 4 years

Did I miss something? Did the Mets clinch a playoff spot last night so the Wilpons extended Minaya?

September 24, 2008  08:57 AM ET

Ironic picture.....Isn't that the Angels backdrop from the press conference when Omar fired Willie (presumably for not making the playoffs last year).
Would t have killed the Mets to wait until they clinched a playoff spot to extend Omar???

This isnt a big deal. He's the best option out there and he did what everyone wanted to do...Fire Willie Randolph. For that alone his number should be retired....or his gigantic collared shirts.

Aside from the Bengals,Lions,Knicks. This is the worst run franchise in sports. Why not wait 6 days and then examine if you want to give him an extension.I can tell you now,he will get one terrible arm in the bullpen, and Manny this offseason. Then we will go into next year with basically the same crap as we have this year.Good job Fred, how in the world are you still a multimilionare with the brain you have?

Firing Willie got him Job security, barracuda...

Four more years of more press conferences where the phrase "You know what I'm sayin" will be heard four thousand times.
