Rangers won't fire Washington

Team president Nolan Ryan said Tuesday, five days short of the end of the season, that he expects manager Ron Washington to return to the Texas Rangers in 2009. No formal announcement has been made, mostly because Ryan doesn't believe it's necessary. Washington rallied the Rangers from a 7-16 start in April and had the club six games over. 500 on Aug. 5 before a recent slide that will assure the Rangers of a losing record for the eighth time in the past nine seasons.

He did a fine job, they just don't have Pitching. Actually they have a curse : Anyone who goes to pitch for the rangers will suck for the rest of their careers.... cough cough... (MIllwood), cough , cough...!

FIRST AGAIN, SHITZNIZZZZZZ... I'M ON A ROLLL AHAHAHAHA

September 24, 2008  08:13 AM ET

Nolan should fire the GM and take over. This team has never given up offensively, but they used alot of different pitchers this year; mostly inexperienced, young arms.

September 24, 2008  08:36 AM ET

GM Daniels made some bad trades (Danks, Chris Young, Galaragga) in return for no one but made a few good trades in getting Murphy, Neftali Perez, Gabbard. Three starters went on the DL and Millwood and Padilla were also out at times causing guys who were not MLB ready to have to pitch. They have some good young arms coming up if they stay patient. And the team seem to go downhill when Murphy and Kinsler both went out along with Bradley who was out for the better part of August and September. But what else is new with Bradley. I think Nolan is the man that can bring order to what has gone on in the past. Still not sure if Washington is the guy or not to lead this team but we shall see.

Ryan has said the obvious publicly, that the organization has been abysmal in developing pitching, and that it is his emphasis. Of course it doesn't happen overnight, but I'm optimistic that for the first time in several years the team appears to at least be moving in the right direction.

September 24, 2008  10:13 AM ET

All they need is a motivational speech from the spark plug that is Art Howe, they will be fine.

September 24, 2008  10:28 AM ET

I live in DFW, and they stink. They have no pitching because they traded it all away. They don't have anyone coming up, and they should fire Daniels and Washington. Ryan should become the GM because I believe he would get good deals done for the Rangers. The biggest problem with firing Washington is who in their right mind would even come to Texas. No one because they haven't shown a desire to win since the late 90's, and even that was an just plain lucky.

September 24, 2008  10:44 AM ET

Fire Washington or I will not renew my season tickets. he is an embarressment to the organization.

September 24, 2008  11:07 AM ET

One thing that Washington was suppose to bring to the Rangers was better fundamentals. They are one of the worst fielding teams in baseball. Nolan Ryan is having to step in and implement an offseason conditioning programs for pitchers. Hopefully it will help but that should have been Washington's job.

Same old story in Dallas with no pitching. Can't stay healthy. When does it turn around? Good news is they have one of the best minor league systems this year.

September 24, 2008  11:26 AM ET

washington isnt an embarressment to the organization the pitching is the one to blame everyone complains about how they suck but this year may actually be good for them because its giving them experience for the next year(matt harrison, luis mendoza, madrigal) if there starters were to be healthy for at maybe a month longer than they are with that offense they could be a wild card team next year, and washington keeps the team from giving up without him i believe the rangers would of lost more than 90 games with that 5.30 something e.r.a

September 24, 2008  12:30 PM ET

Washington is a fine manager. With whom would you replace him with? Get a GM that can get some pitchers in here.

September 24, 2008  01:06 PM ET

i don't mind washington at manager. he isn't the reason that there isn't quality pitching here. it isn't his fault that Blaylock, Murphy, Kinsler, and Bradley have missed a significant amount of time bc of injuries! Murphy was a ROY candidate before his injury, Kinsler was having an incredible season, Bradley was hitting the ball everytime he came to the plate, and Blaylock has turned in some impressive stats during his time back with the team.

also, don't get too carried away with wanting to fire people! we've done that for so many years now with nothing to show for it!

please read this article. if you're a die hard ranger fan, this article should impress those of you who harbor bad feelings for JD. in the MLB teams cannot just flip the switch and make things better (unless your team is NY or BOS). our farm system is loaded and we just need to be patient for once in our underachieving history!

Cubsfanforlife23, thanks for your un biased and completely generic opinion on the Rangers situation. Let's just fire everyone. And regarding the Rangers minor league pitching situation, there are some arms on the way up (see Neftali Feliz). The franchise needs stability, and I think adding Nolan Ryan and keeping the current staff will bring this. Yes daniels made some terrible trades, but some of the more recent ones need some time to develop, while others have been successful (Murphy for Gagne!, signing Bradley, Josh Hamilton, locking up Kinsler, etc..) Judging Ron Washington's performance after this year is unfair. Nolan knows they are building... Washington should and will stay.

September 24, 2008  02:05 PM ET

I think firing Ron Washington would be wrong, the team has not given up on him. He deserves better then the pitching staff he has been given. That's always been the problem with the Rangers though, pitching. Ron Washington has alot of class and it would be unfair to put the Rangers failures on his shoulders. Give him some solid pitching and if they can avoid injuries to their key players I'm sure the team will start winning.

September 24, 2008  03:12 PM ET

Please, they fired Buck Showalter to hire Washington. At least Buck kept them competitive. The whiney players didn't like Buck because he demanded they play hard every game. How coincidental that most of those whiners (Mark Tex) are gone. Buck was fired because young Daniels didn't want a smart baseball guy in town who would question his silly trades. Wash is a Daniels guy. He finally got a shot at MLB Manager because of Daniels. Both need to go. Get some baseball sense in the front office along with Nolan, and put someone in charge of the team on the field who doesn't act like the players' brother.

September 24, 2008  03:47 PM ET

Keep washington. Fire Daniels

Worst pitching team in baseball has given up Chris Young, John Danks, and Edison Volquez just to name a few.

GET SHEETS!!!!!!

September 24, 2008  05:44 PM ET

Since time out of mind, the line on the Rangers has always been: "They don't have pitching". Maybe Nolan should dust off the glove, grab the pine tar, and hit spring training with the Oklahoma Redhawks.

September 24, 2008  07:42 PM ET

How come EVERY year this team can't put it all together ??? It's not the manager !!!

September 24, 2008  08:19 PM ET

No, but Ryan *should* fire Daniels.

September 24, 2008  11:02 PM ET

The rap on the Rangers for years has been bad pitching. The real problem is horrid defense. Nobody can pitch well with 8 stone gloves behind them, and the Rangers have NEVER paid the slightest attention to defense. Nolan Ryan at his peak couldn't win consistently with the defense the Rangers put on the field year after year.
