Did Davis badmouth Shannon?

Miami coach Randy Shannon said he doesn't worry about coaches questioning his job security with recruits. That's good, because last year Marcus Forston said ex-UM coach Butch Davis told him that Shannon ''is a great coach, but he may not be here if they have another losing season.'' Davis, whose North Carolina team visits Saturday, has insisted he doesn't negative-recruit and that ''you don't make a living . . . trashing places I actually care about.'' Shannon, formerly a UM assistant under Davis, said Tuesday he ''really respects'' him ``as a coach and person.''

huh, did I hear something, Okay, back to sleep

September 24, 2008  10:39 AM ET

It's not right but it's part of the game. Coaches do what they do to land recruits.

September 24, 2008  10:58 AM ET

Sorry to be rude but... Who actually pays attention to NorthC's football team... SouthC yes... EastC yes... But if its not about NC basketball... I could care less lol...

September 24, 2008  11:39 AM ET

Hold on THAT_TEXAS_BOY, I'm from Texas and live in NC now, so I can understand your statement, but Butch is putting a team together this year that will be recognized nationally by as early as next year. Since Mack left, UNC has been down, but Butch is righting this ship. I'm not a UNC fan, but I recognize this rebuilding effort.

September 24, 2008  12:05 PM ET

Im a Hurricane fan and i gotta respect Davis. (That_Texas) - You may not realize UNC's slowly putting football back. They beat Miami last year, granted it was a down year for the Canes. Dont knock them, until you actually watch them play. Have you ever heard of Brandon Tate?

September 24, 2008  12:34 PM ET

i dont really consider that badmouthing him. He is just giving his opinion that if they have another losing season he may not be around which is a perfectly believable and honest opinion and also something that they young man should think about but probably hasn't. You hear all kinds of things about guys having the coach tell them he will be around for years only to see them jump ship to the NFL for 1/2 a season and come back to coach one of your rivals. Coaches are some of the most dishonest people in the world. Perhaps the job security situation or the chance to make so much money puts them into a position where they feel they need to make certain promises that they know aren't going to happen? JoePa would never do that but then again JoePa has the job security that most up and coming coaches don't. AD's dont want to spend millions to finish with 4 losses. That may be a good season by some standards but not to a major university trying to get some of the BCS (**** College Shitbowl if you ask me) $$$$. There will never be a college football playoff because America is filled with greedy, stupid people. Its gettting bad for real in regards to the amount of greedy and stupid people in this country. This is gonna sound conceited but everyday I find new ways of why i am better and smarter then everybody else. I don't mean to get off the subject of sports but I hope it changes soon. Canada keeps looking better and better.

I don't know who's fallen further, Miami or it's flippin' "fanbase"? You're like a bunch of sniveling 4-year olds! Miami's got a Pop Warner offense, they're coming off a 5-7 no-bowl season, they've beaten Charleston Southern and a once-great team that also lost to Arkansas State at home, and Shannon's already shown enough signs of desperation by lying about his "best friend's" murder in Gainesville that never happened and trying to make everyone see Miami as the victim after years of deplorable behavior. They're trying to become a relevant football program again in a basketball conference. Stating the facts is not "negative recruiting". It's simply the truth, and right now the truth hurts like hell for Miami. Now wipe your nose, and give your sister her sippy-cup back!

I hardly think this is the worst thing that has been said about Shannon..... you can question a lot about his coaching ability until he actually wins something..... don't think that doesn't come up..... basically, recruits are hearing that Miami is a has been program with an overmatched coach and they won't see the Top 10 again until they fix the coach issue + 3-4 years of rebuilding..... not saying that's 100 pct true, but that's what they're telling the 18 yr old recruits....

just because they dont suck as bad anymore... doesn't mean they are good... we both know if they played a ranked team what would happen

I always get a kick out of it when someone makes a snide comment about a particular coach and then here comes the gator apologist proclaiming SCOREBOARD!SCOREBOARD! WE OWN YOU! maybe it is you 'sir' who needs to put the sippee cup down. Let a team's play define them. the Gators will do what they do with or without such irrelevant rants. ( this is gonna make someone angry).

There isn't a coach in the ACC who should be bad-mouthing anyone. The ACC is a fraud!

September 24, 2008  08:44 PM ET

EastCoastKeith, I notice it says "NJ" beneath your avatar. Are you, by chance, a Rutgers fan?

No he's a poser and loves everything SoCal, USC, the works. Probably a guido.

Nevermind EastCoast, just checked your profile. The ACC is a fraud? Some of the traditional powers in the ACC are down right now, but how can you you look down on another conference when your a fan of a Pac-10 team? Last time I checked, the rest of the Pac-10 was busy getting buried by Mountain West teams. Look, USC is a good team and they would be a contender in any conference, but the rest of the Pac-10 SUUUUUUUUUCKS !!!

I'm really hoping that Oregon State upsets them, it was close last year!

I'm not really into a lot of chest-thumping about the relative strength of conferences. From my vantage point, as a life-long WFU fan (and grad) and ACC fan, the ACC is clearly not on par in football with the SEC or Big 12. However, it's a heck of a lot better this year than the Big East and more competitive top to bottom than the PAC-10 (with the understanding that USC would probably beat any ACC team right now). The Big 10 is probably a little stronger, but not much. The MWC is intruiging this year, but I don't know enough about them to make an assessment, except that they seem to be better than the PAC-10 overall. While the ACC may be a bit down, several programs are solid and will be better again than they are this season (VT, Miami), several are building and are moving in a very positive direction (GT, UNC, and even Duke). I think the jury is still out on what it will take to get FSU back, get Clemson over the hump, and what decisions need to be made to get UVA and UMD relevant again. After suffering WFU games in the 1970s as a kid, I'm just glad to see the Deacs be so competitive consistently, and to still be moving in the right direction.

No, eyeswideopen. I am a long-time USC fan, through the good, then the bad, and now the good again. I don't dislike Rutgers, just their newest ignorant band-wagon jumping fans the last two years (who are now off the wagon obviously and rooting for Notre Dame again). And yes I know your next reply, a Pac-10 fan shouldn't talk about bad conferences right now. But if there's one conference I can talk about, it is the ACC.
