Cubs manager Lou Piniella is only one victory shy of his 1,700th career triumph as manager, but he seems to be weary of the long grind that accompanies the season. "It has been a tough year," Piniella told the New York Daily News. "And sometimes it can really take a toll on you. I don't know how much longer I want to do this." Piniella is signed through 2009 with an option for 2010, though some believe he will retire if the Cubs win it all this year. New York Yankees co-chairman Hank Steinbrenner reportedly is ready to offer Piniella a job as a consultant as soon as he retires from managing.

That would be a good job for him....

September 24, 2008  08:59 AM ET

Why in God's name would he leave Chicago for the mess that is the NY Yankees?

September 24, 2008  09:10 AM ET

Lou, stay in Chicago and avoid having to answer to anything with the last name Steinbrenner! CUBS IN 2008 IT'S GONNA HAPPEN!

September 24, 2008  09:25 AM ET

As a consultant, and waiting in the wings?

September 24, 2008  09:49 AM ET

he wouldnt stoop down to the yankees just cause its the friggin yankees...yeah he was a player on that team..he was an important cog but that was tons of years ago...

theres nothing he can do to improve that team even if he were a consultant...

i think the CUBS should keep Lou in any aspect he can agree to be in..

but heres one thing for certain..I DONT WANT JUST ONE WORLD SERIES..I WANT MULTIPLE CHAMPIONSHIPS....AFTER 100 YEARS 1 JUST DOESNT CUT THE CAKE...LOU WE NEED YOU!!

September 24, 2008  10:20 AM ET

Welcome home Lou...

For all of you who don't seem to want to know, Lou is was and always will be a Yankee. So he did good things for your team, so he managed a lot of other places...

Welcome home Lou.

September 24, 2008  10:40 AM ET

The Skankees have to steal every player and manager available. What a crock of ****!

September 24, 2008  10:42 AM ET

Speculation abound....I remeber reading many times over the summer, as my Yanks slid in mediocrity, that the Steinbrenners blamed this years failures on injuries, and that Girardis job was safe ....they may make a sacrificial lamb out of Cashman though..

September 24, 2008  12:14 PM ET

I have to say..He did for the most part do what he said he was going to do and that's make a contender out of the Cubbies. I can honestly say that as much as I am a Yankees fan. I am proud of the cubs and I can say that I do hope that the Cubs will win the WS this year. Not the Mets Phillies Red Sox. Actually, what I would really like right now is a donut..Anyone have a donut? A cream filled donut. I believe those things are called Boston Creme...I would love to see either the Dodgers or the Cubbies win it...hands down. If Torre can win with the Dodgers this year, I can guarantee you that the Yankees will feel dumber than a doorknob for letting him go as their manager

September 24, 2008  02:00 PM ET

I don't know why anyone would want to work for Hank after the way they treated Joe Torre. Hopefully, Joe will get the last laugh. If the Dodgers win the NL West Joe will be in the playoffs while the Yankees are home watching!!

September 24, 2008  03:03 PM ET

Whod want to work for the pathetic Yankoff organization? Going to currupt him to..shame. I love him as a Cubs manager, he did well this season and hope to see him back next year, GO CUBS!

September 24, 2008  03:04 PM ET

consultant...........hmmm....

September 24, 2008  03:39 PM ET

i mean i like Lou Piniella and all....but what is he gonna consult on?

September 24, 2008  04:03 PM ET

He thinks its been a long year already. Wait until the inevitable disaster (Chicago Cubs jinx) happens.

September 24, 2008  05:24 PM ET

LOU FOR PRESIDENT! STAY IN CHICAGO!

September 24, 2008  05:48 PM ET

I agree with NAM VET 2 in that I hope Lou hangs around at least another season to match-up with and beat the Yankees, either them or the Dodgers (w/Joe T at the helm) beat the Yankees as well ... as much as I hate the freakin' Dodgers! Yankees did Torre wrong big time!

September 24, 2008  07:24 PM ET

Why would a guy with a resume like Lou's want to go work for a lecherous, classless, knee-jerk reaction lowlife like Hank who will publicly doub everything he does and hang him out to dry like he's done all season with the current Yankees organization?
