A Compton judge today sentenced football recruit Maurice Simmons to four years in prison for his part in a robbery. Simmons was found guilty of felony robbery, assault with a firearm and the misdemeanor of allowing someone to bring a gun into his car. A probation officer had recommended that Simmons receive probation, citing his potential as a college football player.

An inner city thug who was given the opportunity of a lifetime and squandered it for the sake of being accepted by the fellow lowlifes in his neighborhood. It never ceases to amaze me.

September 25, 2008  08:33 AM ET

Take heart Pete, with an early release for good behavior he should be on the field for USC for the start of the 2010 season.

September 25, 2008  08:52 AM ET

Yeah given Cali's prison situation, he'll serve what 18 months? might make it back for spring ball in '10, besides now you can go use his scholarship on someone else!

September 25, 2008  09:04 AM ET

You can say the same thing about ex Attn. General Alberto Gonzales: "was given the opportunity of a lifetime and squandered it for the sake of being accepted by the fellow lowlifes". It's a no story. The guy might have been a bust.

Armed robbery huh? im sure glad he got the book thrown at him. useless scum without a soul.

September 25, 2008  09:47 AM ET

Move over Maurice Clarette.

September 25, 2008  09:47 AM ET

Recruit of USC to part of USC.... don't take that leap. And, since this will turn into an SEC debate when the good-old-boys wakeup, around 1pm, you just had one sentenced to 4 years also.

...................Coach Pete Carroll issued a statement saying that a minor complication like prison will not prevent Simmons from practicing and starting for the Trojans next week.

September 25, 2008  11:46 AM ET

You can't blame Pete for this kid's behavior but I wonder if he had been given probation instead of prison would Pete still have welcomed him into the program...? Would he even come close to earning a degree or would it just have been four years "off the street?" Again, I am not pickng on USC but I am beginning to better understand what it takes to compete at the top tier of college football.

September 25, 2008  12:21 PM ET

The whole this is sad. He was given a great opportunity to go to a great school and get a free college education. He blew it. A lot of people around him (he is one of nine kids, older brother played LB at SC and his younger brother is committed for 2009) said he was a good kid in a bad neighborhood. I disagree with everyone feeling bad for him. Feel bad for the guy they robbed at gunpoint! No one made Maurice do it. He shouldn't be viewed as an athlete in prison. He should be viewed as a criminal in prison.

Well I did hear someone on here last week accuse SEC of recruiting criminals. I guess this is God's payback for whoever that was running their mouth. Personally, I thought that only Florida State did that - heard someone once gloss them "Criminoles".

Seriously, it should turn into an SEC debate - and I'm saying that as a staunch SEC guy. These things happen everywhere, unfortunately.

18 months? That would be a stretch. Lee Baca will probably let him go in November and scream that he needs more tax money.

Exactly, SC will offer the best blue-chip prospect in Ohio HIS scholarship.

September 25, 2008  02:16 PM ET

the scholarship went to the new long snapper or adam goodman, the back-up fullback, who was a walk-on

Nice, but after the 13th you sure you want that?
