Dodgers may be done with Penny

Brad Penny became ineligible for postseason play Wednesday when the Dodgers put him on the 60-day disabled list so they could create a spot on the 40-man roster and activate Rafael Furcal. The move might've marked the end of Penny's tenure with the Dodgers, who can buy out the $9.25-million option on his contract for next season for $2 million. Penny, who was 6-9 with a 6.27 earned-run average in a season plagued by shoulder problems, said this month that he pitched hurt and worsened his condition because of the Dodgers' refusal to extend his contract. Of how General Manager Ned Colletti hasn't told him that his 2009 option would be exercised, Penny said, "It just tells me they were never sold on me, which is fine."

Too bad. Remember when he started the All-Star game a few years ago? Dude was 100mph on the gun... You could hear the baseball whine towards the plate... You could even hear the batter's fraustration at the unexpected velocity. The commentator's were austounded. Joe Buck creamed in his pantelones.

Penny didn't return after that game - you know why? Because he's on the same conditioning program as David Wells. He's just another Mr. Glass - plain and simple.

A very smart move by the Dodgers. Penny has stunk up the place the past two years. I fully agree that he is on the David Wells conditioning program. Here's other changes I think they need to make. Jeff Kent needs to retire; Garciparra spends too much time on the DL; Andruw Jones was a terrible signing especially after how bad he sucked last year with the Braves; Personally, I hope they keep Manny.

87 mph gas,I can't imagine why they left him off.

That's what Alicia Milano said too.

Remember the old adage a Penny lost is a penny earned.

September 25, 2008  04:46 PM ET

Wow, that is a change. I thought for sure that the Dodgers would re-up him for 6 years and $50 mil.

September 25, 2008  05:12 PM ET

to add to the Chasin' Utley's comment (truly, I thought of this before I read the comment!!) I guess it amounts to about $7,500,000,000 pennies saved, eh?

Penny said, "It just tells me they were never sold on me, which is fine."

And, rightly so it appears

September 25, 2008  05:46 PM ET

Well by this slight I guess the Dodgers figure he is only worth a "Penny" on the dollar !!!

September 25, 2008  08:54 PM ET

a penny for your thoughts

September 25, 2008  09:06 PM ET

Maddux is done, Penny history, Karoda would make a good trading card. At least the Dodgers have the three big guns and strong bull-pen.

One down and 4 to go!!!!

September 26, 2008  06:02 AM ET

i was never impressed with penny, even when he won 16 games two years in a row. His fastball was good but his control was never fully there. Now his fastball isn't even there.
The Dodgers are still paying lots of money to guys who are doing absolutely nothing - Schmidt, Jones, Penny....
WHERE WOULD WE BE WITHOUT MANNY!!!???
MANNY IS GOD

I'm not surprised they left him off this year but am surprised at the negative comments. Over the past 4 years (until this year) he had a very solid ERA, the best stat for judging pitchers. Last year he was 16-4 with a 3.03 ERA. I wish my team had more underperformers like that.

Fans can be fickle. You have a bad year and they forget how good you have been for the team.

The fans can be very fickle. I, for one think that penny has been a contributor to the Dodgers, and the fact that he pushed himself on a bum shoulder does not make him worthless. I think that the Dodgers should pick up his contract. there are not many pitchers of penny's caliber that are going for 7.5 mil. if he has a off season to heal he should be back to form for '09.
