Willingham feeling heat in Washington

Few days go by in Seattle without a discussion about Tyrone Willingham's future as the Huskies' head coach. And this week, with Washington coming off a bye, the topic is back with a vengeance. The Huskies are 0-3 after losses to Oregon, BYU and Oklahoma - all Top 25 teams at the time (Oregon has since dropped out). And the view from up north is that an 0-4 start, with a home loss to Stanford on Saturday night, would be a disaster, sealing Willingham's fate as a soon-to-be-fired coach. If the Huskies lose to the Cardinal, who are 3 1/2-point underdogs, it will be the first 0-4 start of Willingham's coaching career. Willingham said Tuesday he hopes his team's first three games, perhaps the most difficult opening stretch in the country, will be useful over the final nine games.

Hmm.. I think its racially motivated.

September 25, 2008  09:01 AM ET

Why is it racially motivated? He is either is sucessful and keeps his job or is unsucessful and losses it. I think he woudl be a great AD. He has coached at Stanford, Notre Dame, and the Univ. of Washington and no recruiting violations!

Maybe that jack*** of an athletic director of Syracuse will hire Willingham if he ever gets the balls to fire Robinson. Come to think of it, we should do an even swap of these two losers.

September 25, 2008  09:27 AM ET

Dont fire the coach because some idiot in the administration agreed to play 3 Top 25 teams to start the season when the other teams schedule DIV II teams to get the season off on the right foot. They should have 1 win since they got hosed against BYU.

i agree

I hope he does get fired. Couldn't happen to a better guy. While at Stanford, he had a player come out as gay on his team, and did everything he could to ostracize the player and eventually kicked him off the team, because it didn't fit with Willingham's beliefs. That young man could have ruined Willingham's career then for what he had to go through, but decided to be the bigger man. Coach Willingham, you stink, and I hope you never get to coach and shape young minds again.

September 25, 2008  09:34 AM ET

If they fire him he yell the reason they fired him is because he's black.

so the man coaches 50 + players every year for at least the last 10 yrs and 1 player has a beef with him so you fire him??...great logic....

He didn't exactly ostracize him. The player was Dwight Slater, and he was black like Willingham. I read an article about how Dwight decided to come to his football team first, and when he told coach, he basically told him it was a non-issue and that he should tell his family. He sort of pressured him into telling his family, which Dwight did not like. He didn't get kicked off the team he quit because he knew other players were saying ****. Willingham didn't do everything he could have done, but he certainly didn't do anything wrong. Get your facts straight. He's a great coach who's just been in bad situations.

Antonio looks like you have a man crush on Ty!

He's NOT a good football coach, end of story.

September 25, 2008  10:36 AM ET

This is not racial, Look at his coaching record? 1-5 in Bowls, 11-28 at U of W, 76-80 over all??? He had 1 good season at Stanford and 1 at ND? He HASNT POSTED a winning record at U of W yet? (Why is he still around? BECAUSE OF RACE!!! A white coach would have been outta there last year!

Losing to 3 Top 25 teams in understandable? Reasonable? LISTEN U Of W FANS.... Has the program gone downhill that much that you forgot the U of Dub tradition of winning??? U of W had a 26 year streak of consecutive winning seasons! Was a perennial powerhouse and a top 10 winningest program in the NCAA? Don James had a .726 career pct (22 unbeaten streak) 10-5 in Bowl games. Gil Dobie .780 (58 win streak) From 1980???s to early 2000 U of W was always top tier in the Pac 10. And ALWAYS stood tall against the SUPPOSEDLY stronger teams OKL Loss of undefeated season to U of W in Bowl game 1985) and Miami Home win streak broken 58games broken by U of W which also KO???d Miami???s NC. 4 wins against Big 10 Champs! U of W WAS A POWER people respected???.. Now we are a doormat and punchline! Have U of W fans fallen so far they forgot how to win? U of W WAS a Top 10 ALL TIME WINNINGEST Program!!!! What happened? A crappy AD and Tyrone!!! A good coach BUT NOT A TOP TIER top 10 coach!!!

You win, you stay (unless, as I've said before, you are John Cooper); you lose, you're gone.

I think that was sarcasm

Props to Jabril.

Ty is a fine person and a great role model for coaches and players. Say what you want about how he was dismissed at ND (he left a very wealthy man by the way) but I believe the real issue there was his work ethic. He did not like to commit himself to the necessities of recruiting that a major program requires. From what I have read the same issue is surfacing at WU. ND's program started to "spiral" down on his watch so they made a change. Call it racial if you want but I have always maintained that the only color ND sees is "green." The loss of BCS bowl money bothered them more than the bad press they would get for letting him go. Weis delivered in his first two years with huge BCS bowl payouts (appx $30M each). Last year was a disaster and if this year continues in that direction he will be under a lot of pressure. If he is let go will all of you ND haters start screaming that the school was discriminating against "fat" people.

Ty getting fired has nothing to do with racism, Charlie Weis, Notre Dame, or even Washington's schedule (lame excuse). It has to do with his performance on and off the field. It doesn't matter how nice of a guy you are, in college football, it has to deal with results on the field!

If anytime of black coach gets fired, racism is suspected, then black coaches will probably never get hired. It's a dangerous and slippery slope.

Hope that was sarcasm. No freaking excuses for how Losingham has ran this program into the ground.

John Cooper had like a 3-13-1 record against Michigan, Columbus doesn't tolerate that stuff. If you're an OSU fan you'll know the real tragedy for the Scarlett and Silver was the firing of Earl Bruce!

As a college football fan, (Black) brotha, and Willingham supporter (who thought the ND thing was racial in light of how they treated Weis and his suck record), Coach Ty sucks and needs to be fired. UW fans deserve a coach who will put in the effort to bring the best talent to one of college football's great programs. And I say this as a Cal guy.
