Mariano Rivera pitched four times in five days before the Yankees were eliminated from playoff contention this week. On Thursday, he left the team to return to New York for a magnetic resonance imaging exam on his right shoulder. There is some fear that Rivera could need arthroscopic surgery, although the procedure would be minor and would not be expected to affect him next spring.

If Mo's surgery DOES affect him next year, they will put Joba in the closer's role, and say that's how they planned it all along ... reliever, to starter, to reliever, to closer.

Ohhhhh......my bad.........the first thought that came into my head was Xanadu with Olivia Newton John.

according the they Yankee website, he will be available for this weekend.. that he is having the MRI and then meeting the team in boston today. i don't really think its going to be a big deal. besides that whole article says that his body is "cracky" and its not just his shoulder

September 26, 2008  09:22 AM ET

No matter, the guy doesn't have much left in the tank anyway

September 26, 2008  10:05 AM ET

Rivera is fine but if he is feeling sore I wouldn't use him the rest of the year unless Moose leaves Sunday's game with the lead and with his chance to win 20 games on the line I'd go to him to finish it off.

September 26, 2008  10:36 AM ET

or you could use joba to close out the game for moose.....i wouldnt risk using rivera anymore this year, get him healthy for next year

Riiight. ERA 1.43, 38 saves in 39 attempts. Only the best closer in the game. Idiot.

Mariano, surgery...
I don't even want to hear those two words in the same sentance, paragraph, day!
I will be watching this one. He has been the most consistant and dominant player, although in a specific and limited role, I have seen. For a long time Mariano was automatic, or as close as it comes in baseball.
