The guaranteed money per season in the contract of Purdue men's basketball coach Matt Painter is a little more than one-third that of Indiana coach Tom Crean, according to public documents released to The Star this week. Painter, last season's Big Ten Coach of the Year, has a six-year contract through 2012-13 that guarantees him an average of $843,000 per year. Crean, hired from Marquette to rebuild IU's program after an NCAA investigation and the resignation of former coach Kelvin Sampson, is guaranteed $2.36 million per year in a 10-year contract through 2017-18.

And?

September 26, 2008  11:04 AM ET

That's because one guy is getting paid to eat Filet Mignon and one guy is getting paid to eat a turd sandwich. You have to pay the turd sandwich guy more money.

You have to consider the success of their mens football team and their womens b-ball team. They have an excellent athletic program. I don;t know how much money they have to give to painter?

Since they only play once this year, they should play for their salaries.

Knowing Coach Painter, if Purdue beats IU this year and has a better season overall, he won't care at all about the monetary discrepancies.

Fantastic journalism! You're really a joke. Stop trying to stir up sh&*. Let a good coach run a good program. Painter has instilled values in young men that play basketball. They play the sport with integrity, grit, and pride. I know that won't sell many advertisements...but shut up and find a new subject that fulfills your need to find cheap drama in sports.

So now 800,000 a year is chump change damn. Well I bet this writer makes 32,000 a year and the espn writers make 50,000 a year now that is some drama. So times the espn writers salaries by 16 and you get that coaches yearly salary. It really does suck that a good writer at espn makes a 16th of the salary of a good basketball coach. And lets feed the fuel that every pro athlete and coach can wine about making millions a year. Just shut up and do your job.

Everyone complained about Saban getting the big contract, and guess what he's worth every penny if he wins the SEC West, plays for SEC Championship and competes for the BCS Championship. Crean will attempt to do the same thing at IU. He'll need to recruit well, which he can because these kids will get lots of playing time. The challenge will be for him to graduate players, not likely if he wants to win now. As long as he wins a B10 Tournament title in year 2 or 3, he'll be on track for big things. Lots of talent in the state of Indiana.

Yeah im glad this was brought up now than in the season. It's always been known that Purdue coaches get paid less than IU coaches. I could look it up on the internet and be right. It's like RichRod will get paid more than Dantonio will. Big Programs pay big Bucks.

this is simply the diff between the haves and have nots - IU has more resouces outside of state funds...

Crean should be paid more.
Look at the terrible mess that Bob Knight left behind.

Crean should be paid more.
Look at the terrible mess that Bob Knight left behind, compared to the clean program that Keady left at Purdue.

Ofcourse Crean gets more. Do you know how much those tanning bills add up to????

Crean is over-rated. He had one good run with Wade, who has turned out to be a top-5 NBA talent. Other than that, his teams have choked in every post-season tournament. You'll see...his in-game coaching stinks. IU was simply desperate in the hire.

IU's athletic program is in a shambles. They are off an ex coach who violated rules, another one who was not popular, several inept football coaches and several incompetent Athletic Directors. No one would take the job for less than 2mill a year

IU pays there coaches in confederate dollars, since most people there are so stupid that they think the South won the Civil War.
