Tressel gets O-line's attention

Ohio State named a new assistant offensive line coach after the loss to USC -- smaller guy, former quarterback, makes more than $3 million a year. "It wasn't a group decision," Jim Tressel said. "I wasn't voted in. They didn't ask me to come down there." The head coach just gave himself the job and the Monday after that 35-3 defeat showed up at the offensive line drills, like the principal stalking down the hallway, and started yelling. "It's like, the big man's here, we've got to really do things right," left guard Jim Cordle said, "and really play fast and really play hard, even in the little drills we do at the beginning of practice." He was more involved in the details of line play than they had ever seen. While Tressel spread his mantra of "play faster" around the team, it was clear the offensive line was his focus, and they didn't mind being singled out.

This will be huge with Beanie coming back with Pryor! They need to show everyone that this is not the same team at the beginning of the year.

September 26, 2008  08:40 AM ET

OK. But the horse is already out of the barn..Perhaps he should have got more involved before the season starts....

September 26, 2008  08:42 AM ET

I agree with 50, why didn't he do this when something bigger was on the line, like USC, not Minnesota!

September 26, 2008  09:03 AM ET

Sounds like an indictment of his Offensive Line Coach? Benching Boeckman for Pryor, now this? Sounds like desperation is moving into Columbus.

September 26, 2008  09:30 AM ET

Or he could be fixing the mistakes to make sure lazy play doesnt happen again...Boeckman had to go, since last year. He had to do something to wake the team up, getting after the big boys infront of everyone usually does the trick.

September 26, 2008  09:41 AM ET

After seeing how sluggish they looked against USC anything would be an improvment. They shouldnt have needed help getting up for that game.

September 26, 2008  10:48 AM ET

U don't want to get the sweater vest Angry! the Buckeyes will be fine now that their finished playing major college football talent and just have big 10 games left. They'll look like world beaters until January, when the BCS will be sure to put them against the big east winner or Boise State so they don't get embarrassed again.

It's about time. Next he ought to go look at the defense.

September 26, 2008  11:17 AM ET

Whats sad is that oregon st. did what Ohio st. couldn't... shows how good ohio st is

September 26, 2008  11:19 AM ET

or shows how much you can under estimate a team....

That USC team was not the same team that played OSU.

Looks like Penn State should be the #1 team (they took Oregon State apart 45-14)...hey what about that weak Big 10?

lol..that is a pretty dumb comment...it's like saying penn state would blow usc out because they blew out oregon state and usc lost to them...stop letting your fingers think for you..thats why god gave you a brain..or at least he should have

September 26, 2008  12:35 PM ET

Ohio State's D did O.K. against Troy's spread. We'll see how many points LSU gives up against Troy a little later. All the pieces are there and with Beanie coming back and Pryor at QB, I'm looking for a big jump forward beginning this week, much like when Troy Smith took over in 2005.

so u think the big 10 is strong? compared 2 who... the wac confrence

September 26, 2008  12:36 PM ET

The Beavers showed what would have happened to USC if Tressell had had Beanie to run the ball. the Beavers ran it right down USC's throat most of the night, the Buckeyes didn't have that working for them. The end result could have still been a USC victory, but the score would have been alot closer.

You eat this **** up dont ya!

I think this is a panic move on Tressel's part. He has to realize his assistant coaches aren't capable, and not only on offense. Maybe we'll see some moves at the end of the season.
