Three Oregon football players -- including freshman quarterback Darron Thomas -- were involved in a speed-racing crash early Thursday in Springfield that sent two of them to a hospital. Thomas remains in contention to start Saturday at Washington State despite suffering a bruised elbow on his right throwing arm when he rode in the front passenger seat of a Ford Mustang driven by teammate Eddie Pleasant. "He's fine," Oregon coach Mike Bellotti said of Thomas, who threw for 210 yards and three touchdowns -- all in the fourth quarter -- while making his college debut in the Ducks' home loss to Boise State. Pleasant, a redshirt freshman linebacker, was cited by Springfield police for reckless driving and speed racing. Pleasant, 19, and sophomore receiver Jamere Holland, 20, will miss Saturday's game because of injuries suffered in the accident, Bellotti said before Thursday's practice. Bellotti indicated that Thomas and Holland will probably not be disciplined, but he's yet to make a decision on Pleasant.

First!! So why aren't the players being disciplined? They triedto kill the 4th string QB!!!
Great example coach.

September 26, 2008  08:39 AM ET

Oregon seems cursed, but a lot of it seems to be their own doing.

September 26, 2008  09:02 AM ET

Okay, I'm gonna take one for the team here......AFLAC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

September 26, 2008  09:40 AM ET

Not the QB! Damn, Oregon's QB's are dropping like flies.

After so many incidents with players, coaches, and coach's wives, even, it is time to consider better leadership for these young men?

September 26, 2008  03:15 PM ET

WOW, better leadership?, The coach cant, and should not have to be in the car with these KIDS. It is the responsability of the parents to instill the values needed to make the decision not to be street racing.
I have two teen boys of my own, and I can hope and pray that they do not make bad decisions, but I certainly would not be able to put that blame on some one else.
Valueman, I am having a difficult time refraining from using other comments about your opinion, and you are certainly welcome to that opinion, but I would be willing to Bet $ that if you were to look into this a little more in depth that you would find that any and all of the types of cenarios that you would be referring too at the UofO, could and probably do happen at any or all of the colleges in the US. from CCs. too Division I. The difference being that Oregon is in the public eye and there for is brought to the attention of all who wish to make their thoughts, and or opinions known. Thank You for yours, you only support my observations as I am a property manager and my biggest headache with my job is the lack of respect from young residents (Im being PC.), and the parents that believe that it is ok for them to be disprespectful, and to not take responsability for their own actions or that of their off spring.

Kids really won't ever learn, will they? Yeah, I think they should all be suspended.

September 26, 2008  06:38 PM ET

jeez-us! ducks qbs are dropping like flies. who put the curse on us? a disgruntled husky no doubt!
what's next? locusts? frogs raining from the sky?

September 26, 2008  08:53 PM ET

A few Ducks got in a high speed crash, but this season, just like the end of the last one, looks like a low speed crash.

September 27, 2008  12:04 AM ET

Way to go coach, let them know you're not going to put up with anyone who acts up. Maybe next time you could buy them some beer.

September 27, 2008  05:08 AM ET

He's their coach, not their parent, although that is a fine line which requires a special talent on the part of a good coach. Sounds more like a parenting issue to me, but even with that, unfortunately kids will be kids. Automobiles and teenagers are a very scary mix ... when you study the statistics on the age group 16 - 25, it will make your jaw drop. It's a wonder any of us live through it. The national media will obsess on the tragic death of one young person who dies is some bizarre circumstance, while thousands will die each year, with even thousands more critically injured, in automobile accidents. All terrorists, war, and crime combined don't compare to these numbers for American kids. As a parent of daughters driving and about to start, I need to remain aware of the true dangers to them and measures we all can take to avoid this type of tragedy.

QUOTE(#12):

why does oregon have the ugliest uniforms ever?

Because they get them free from Phil Knight at Nike, a Oregon alum.

September 27, 2008  02:43 PM ET

toe slide 360, no one is asking them to be their parents, but we are we asking that they be held accountable and punished for something that not only caused bodily injury but could very well have killed someone! This isn't kids being kids, this is kids being stupid.

September 28, 2008  08:52 PM ET

As long as we're in Oregon, imagine this: OSU plays OSU in a bowl. I.e., Oregon St. Vs. Oklahoma St. The orange would be blinding.

Street raciong is a crime, for good reason. It endangers the lives of innocent people. The passengers were legal accomplices. How can they not all be immediately suspended? How can this be tolerated by the coaching staff? How can they not all be in jail?
