Should Lions hire Dumars?

You might think I'm kidding. I am not. You might think I'm insane. But hear me out. The Lions should offer the job of team president to ... Joe Dumars. I think if the Lions hired Dumars, he would immediately tell everybody in the organization: This is who we're going to be. Before the Pistons started winning, he told all his players, coaches and scouts they would build around defense, toughness, work ethic and teamwork. Dumars has known Bill Ford Jr. for years. He already has credibility with the family and with the community. If Dumars said, "Hey, I know there is a big-time running back available, but we said we'd build through defense, and our scouts prefer this defensive tackle," then I think the Fords would listen. And Dumars could sell that to fans and reporters.

Who thinks up this kind of crap?? Most would agree that Dumars has done a fine job with the Pistons, but please.....
The Lions need someone who knows FOOTBALL.
That being said, based on the Lions track record, if they did hire Dumars, it wouldn't shock me.
They could have Scotty Bowman waiting in the wings.
Waiting in the Wings! Hey, that's pretty good! At least it's a better joke than this story.

this has to be a tongue in cheek spin on how bad the lions front office is. and how much the city loves dumars

Hahahaha... Joe D did turn instant results for the Pistons.... instead of Joe D, maybe they can hire his old teammate, Zeke.... the one Isaih Thomas. Hahahahaha.

September 26, 2008  07:59 AM ET

If the Lions want to continue their "winning" ways they'd hire a guy that knows nothing about football to be their GM.

September 26, 2008  08:17 AM ET

Don't be stupid. This is worse than insane....

September 26, 2008  08:18 AM ET

I read this yesterday. The point of the article isn't that Dumars knows football, the point is Dumars is smart enough to know he doesn't know football. Presidents don't make personnel moves, GM's do. Presidents set the tone (Defense, win in the trenches, definitely Joe D's approach with the Pistons). It also mentions that, unlike Millen, Joe D would be smart enough to surround himself with winners, with people smarter than himself that know football. Joe D is enough of a winner to be able to realize his own weaknesses.

Beyond that, of course the guy was having fun writing this, but he brings up some good points. Millen always thought he knew how to win, and was never smart enough to listen to others..., humility at the right time can be key to being successful in sports.

Also, remember, the Lions did hire a fricken TV broadcaster, and handed over both the President and GM role, all at once... so stupid is not out of the Lion's equation....

But seriously people, read the whole article: obviously it is written in a bit of jest.

Holland would better,he has more winning years. GO WINGS,PISTONS, will some day the LIONS and the TIGERS.Oh lest not to be for gotten the SHOCK.

More intrigueing to me is the comments Floyd Reese made, "I could be in Detroit tomorrow...", to be honest, I wouldnt mind seeing that. Give him the reigns early, let him get a feel for the team before he hires his new coach and decides what personnel moves to make...

Detroit can't be looking to take a risk and hit a home run. They need to take it the safe route. Reese has definitely proven he can make solid personnel decisions.

Bring this guy in soon, at least as a consultant. He sure is saying all the right things.

Who wouldn't want the really high pay and job security that comes with being Lions GM. And, you get to look like a hero to one of the best football cities in the country. Detroit has one of the best fan bases in the NFL, how else do you explain selling out every game during Millen's tenure?

September 26, 2008  08:29 AM ET

I'm available too ...

September 26, 2008  08:30 AM ET

and I promise not to draft a wide receiver ...

September 26, 2008  08:31 AM ET

The Lions took the first right step in getting rid of Millen. The next step is finding a QB for the future. Kitna is 36. They need to decide if they have the right QB on their roster or should they look elsewhere. They have good skill position players, but I don't know what they'll do with Roy Williams.

September 26, 2008  08:51 AM ET

Package him with Charles Rogers and Mike Williams for a long snapper?

September 26, 2008  09:23 AM ET

i HONESTLY thought "hey, the bears should hire john paxson" recently. at least his first round draft picks are still on the team. AND IN THE LEAGUE!!!

September 26, 2008  09:41 AM ET

this may just be the most ridiculous bulls--t ever..

September 26, 2008  10:19 AM ET

They should fire a bunch of people and complete the house cleaning first, before they start hiring anybody. Clear the deck for the new guy!

September 26, 2008  10:26 AM ET

Maybe they should hire Bobby Ross as GM...anybody who loved Barry Sanders should remember this guy.

*shakes head*
